Construction projects against housing shortage – Everyone is for more housing, just not in their neighborhood (German)

  1. Well, I actually only see stupid projects in my region… It’s like 5 years old drew plans and they try to make as much money as they can and don’t care about quality at all… I wouldn’t buy anything right now… It’s a lottery… Only, you won’t loose CHF 5 but 1.5millions

  2. We’re voting in Geneva now for the construction of 6-floor buildings in place of individual houses in an area that is inside the city’s perimeter, super well connected by all means of transport and surrounded by other buildings.

Interestingly the tdg ran an article on the views of neighbours. Only a few years ago a new development of other high rises finished just next to those houses, and the journal interviewed à neighbour in one of those new buildings. His answer: densification is nice, but he prefers to have the houses next door even if the project contains what will now become a massive public park, because the houses don’t spoil the views.

The mental contorsions that some people go through to justify their selfishness are incredible.

  3. It’s a classic situation. I have a friend who bought a house at a reduced price via a cantonal housing scheme. Now they are of course voting against new housing being built in their area. That also pushes for new neighbourhoods being built further and further from the city Center and from services. It’s hypocrisy 101.

  4. We need some promotion of warm countries as an ideal destination for retirement. In Geneva, quite a number of old people cannot move away from their 5 room appartments because they still pay the rent they contracted 30 years ago and anything smaller would be 4 times as expensive.

  5. I live in Zürich City and respect that we need more housing. I am for the city building new housing units. In fact, we have 3 construction projects happening in our neighborhood to support this.

The problem is, all of the new additions are *gray concrete cubes* and they are just so very depressing to look at, especially compared to the charm of the older buildings.

Why is Swiss design so soulless and uninspired?

  6. I don’t believe this is wise at all. When there is too much traffic, increasing the number of roads never helps. The traffic just adjusts until the congestion catches up.

It’s the exact same with housing. We need to recognise at one point that not everyone who wants to can move here. It sucks but… well I just don’t see any other possibility. We don’t have to be racist about it, we can still help poor people, but if the area is just so popular everyone wants to be here there isn’t much we can do, actually.

  7. Also everyone wants affordable houses… until they own one. Then they wish the prices to go up indefinitely.

  8. I live in a new neighborhood that opened in 2022. A small part of the new buildings are subsidized ownership. The whole complex is the first of a three-parts development.

One of the neighbors told me he’d blanket-oppose any new construction. While knowing he can’t actually oppose them (the urban planning is confirmed for a while now). She is literally the embodiment of that paradox. She *owns* a flat in a 6-stories building in Geneva, in new neighborhood right next to older villas.

  9. More housing will not solve the issue. It takes years to build the buildings. And those who are built are too expensive to live in for most.

It’s better to dissect larger flats into smaller units. There is more than enough living are in Switzerland already. It’s just used brutally inefficient.

  10. People that are not for more housing are mentally challenged sadly. You are driving young, educated people out of the country. Your workforce. Who will keep your economy afloat? The decrepit 80 year olds with villas that do not work?

  11. Idk why but this housing complex is so ugly, gives me commie Russia vibes. I’ve seen maybe one or two complexes that were nice looking and with a garden

  12. I mean, I think they need to focus on low priced housing instead of catering to large apartments so much. I think that would fix more problems than creating large apartments for the people who are better off.

  13. I bought right at the Landwirtschaftszone (and with a biodiversity strip of land between). It’ll be a while until they start building high-rises in my view.
