**The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has appointed a law doctor and lab to investigate how the young man died. Around noon, divers from the civil protection had recovered 23-year-old Valentin from Walloon Brabant in the water of the Handelsdok in Ghent. Civil protection divers found him in the water of the Handelsdok, near the pedestrian and cyclist bridge. We informed the family immediately.” The young man’s family was in Ghent to follow up search operations. These had started after the boy had disappeared on the Nieuwe Vaart canal, nearby.
How and where Valentin ended up in the water, no one can say yet. “It is too early to elaborate on that,” Remue said, “for the sake of serenity to the family.” According to some sources, it might have been an accident. A law doctor has been appointed to examine the body.
The young man disappeared on Friday night when his friends entered the Kompass Club nightclub on the New Vaart without him. He was too drunk to enter, and left alone. After that, there was no trace of Valentin. On Monday morning, dozens of police officers then searched the banks of the New Docks and a helicopter flew over the search zone. On Tuesday, three boats with sonar equipment and two diving teams were deployed, but to no avail. A search was also carried out in and around the nightclub, but without success. Yesterday, detectives concentrated on camera images along the route the man may have taken. And today another search was conducted with boats and divers from the civil protection. They recovered his body around noon.
Fucking sad. If only his friends hadn’t ditched him.
