Quite right. But has anyone seriously considered them a superpower since the USSR collapsed? Think it’s been pretty widely accepted there’s just been one for a generation now. And the next candidates are definitely not going to be Russia, but China or the EU depending on what one is looking at.

The only reason Russia can be considered a major player is because they have a TON of nukes. Russia Has a smaller economy than Italy or South Korea and the only thing keeping it afloat is hydrocarbons.
The country is facing a major demographic decline, which is strongly exacerbated the Invasion of Ukraine as tens of thousands of young men are conscripted to fight in this evil war, or flee the country to avoid it. Pretty much anyone with a way out of the country is leaving.
The country is in deep shit and it’s trying to make it everyone else’s problem. Hopefully once it looses this war it’ll be too weak to cause any more damage.
As a Lithuanian, I can say that nobody cares what politicians say. We were in Soviet Union, now we are in European Union. What changed? Nothing, only the ones who rule and throw us scraps. 20% of our budget are EU handouts, let that sink in. So these speeches mean jack shit. Politicians will say what they are told.
