Parent horrified by ‘camera’ above Surrey school toilets

  1. Ignoring that, based on the deleted comments, OP seems to like the idea of putting cameras in school toilets, this seems to be a quite open and shut safeguarding issue and the school should be closed immediately. All parents should remove their children if not.

  2. This article is awful and the people writing it have no idea what it’s like to work in a school. Likewise the parent is looking for validation on vague statement in order to trigger an unjustified response from the community.

For those that aren’t aware, toilet passes and cameras in the toilet are normal in schools, especially school that have widespread problems with pupils vaping and bullying in the toilets.

These cameras will not and cannot be positioned to look inside an toilet cubicle, they are fixed position cameras hence why the logical place is to put them above the cubicle facing out, if you have it on the other side of the room then you could see into the cubicle when the door opened.

It’s a shame the school haven’t clarified this to the parent but if I’m honest the type of parent that runs to a newspaper to kick off about this is also the type of parent that kicks off with the school about every minor thing that their poor Kadie-leigh doesn’t like and they’re probably just fed up of it tbh.

  3. Obviously it would be hugely wrong, and very concerning, for there to be cameras inside toilets.

However, and this isn’t to justify at all this particular incident (and I want to stress that), people who aren’t in teaching are massively underestimating the significant social issues schools are seeing post-Covid, and what a difficult situation schools are in when it comes to toilets.

I’m a secondary school teacher. We used to have quite a strict policy of only allowing students to use the toilet in between lessons or during break.

However, this became unenforceable as it caused too much confrontation. So we decided to become more relaxed about it. Since then, the toilets have been completely trashed and we’ve had significant safeguarding issues around the use of these spaces. And people shouldn’t underestimate what a huge issue vaping has become for schools.

Ultimately, it’s really not easy for schools. Some schools are too totalitarian and that’s an issue and something I instinctively loathe. Fortunately, I’m not at one of those schools. But it’s very easy for people outside of teaching to make judgement when the issue is actually very complex and challenging to navigate.

  4. Just had a horrible thought, quite sad actually.

Maybe I was wrong for the reasons the camera is there. The purpose for it is a previous student committed suicide in the toilets. Ever since wanted to watch their pupils closely.

Hear about these teenagers of late with problems and taking their own life.

If that’s why, then no wonder there’s not much mentioned on it for being too upsetting.

  5. Whoever argued for installing cameras in school toilets and signed off on the decision honestly needs their hard drive checked….

  6. > SurreyLive attempted to contact The Winston Churchill School on multiple occasions by phone and email since Monday but has still not received a response, with the school hanging up the phone on multiple occasions. It is unclear from the picture where exactly the alleged camera can see or record footage.

A really stupid move on the part of the school there.

Burying your head in the sand doesn’t make problems go away.
