Nine-out-of-10 Airbnb hosts would rather leave their units idle than rent it out to long-term tenants, survey finds

  1. And this is why we need punitive vacancy taxes.

Keeping property idle during a housing crisis is social violence.

  2. When asked, nine out of ten would. In reality, if that income stream was taken away from them they’d soon change tune.

btw, this was a survey of 181 owners… conducted by Airbnb community managers

  3. Not everything is black and white, we have neighbours in their 70’s who’s large bungalow is split in two, they live in the one bedroom granny flat and rent the three bedroom half out on airbnb. They can choose how many weeks it’s rented, block out weeks when they have family staying with them and not have the worry of permanent tenants sharing their property. They did rent the place out on a long term lease years ago to a couple they knew but the place ended up getting wrecked while because of the way airbnb works every visitor has left the place spotless.

  4. Judging by the majority of comments it’s
Air bnb ‘s fault the country is in an accomadation crisis,, another let of for the stream of incompetent governments ,they must love this sort of stuff

  5. Home owners effectively lose control over their asset after a tenant is in the place for six months. To say nothing of rolling eviction bans.

People just think “greedy landlords,” but generally, individuals don’t want to be forever landlords. If they rent their place, that’s the outcome that is effectively forced on them.

  6. “**Their property”.**

They paid income tax on earnings, saved the rest to buy/build a house. If they got it as a gift they paid 33% capital gains tax on that. Then they pay income tax on the rental income from the property.

Now they are vilified for not offering their property to long term applicants to bail the state out of a housing crisis that their taxes are going to get us out of?.

They owe the state nothing. Its a private property.

  7. Isn’t the whole purpose of AirBnB that its a temporary place to stay for a night or two?

Like how you blow up an Air Mattress at a friend’s place to stay the weekend?

Why would you expect these people to take on long term tenants?

  8. It’s really quite simple if you are in the privileged position of owning a second property that is not being rented out then there should be a VERY heavy tax applied to that property (holiday homes included).

We are in a housing emergency and as such anything that brings housing back to the market for sale or rent must be done.

  9. After one month of no air bnb income, 9 out of ten aribnb hosts said they would sell or rent out their houses.

What a bunch of fucking spoilt pricks.

  10. That’s fine, the state should start seizing properties left vaccant for long periods, sell them in public auction and give the money to the landlords after taking a sizeable portion out of it as cunt tax.

  11. They’re either liars or rich enough that they can leave an asset vacant in which case they shouldn’t be complaing about the cost of getting planning permission etc.

  12. I’ve been using Airbnbs for family getaways because we want a kitchen etc with kids, it works out cheaper and we get to go to nice spots.

I think banning airbnbs in high pressure areas like city centres etc makes sense, but not rural locations – if anything they bring much need tourism.

  13. Why pay tax and keep a property in working condition for tennants when you can make the same money in a weekend and not have to lift a finger?

  14. Oh but that’s easy to fix: ban Airbnb and introduce a vacant tax. They’ll either sell and allow people to buy a home or actually rent it.

  15. Man air bnb has got to go or be heavily regulated because it seems the housing problem could be fixed but getting rid of them

  16. It’s really misleading as it implies they would rather make no profit rather than 5 times as much through short term leasing

  17. Air bnb is very attractive for renters to use. Your not dealing with cash, its paid beforehand. The tenants come with a review from previous renters. You can shut down the account at will. Perhaps if you took the IT platform of Airbnb and used to for long term stays, there would be more people in the rental market.

  18. Some people, usually decent people who aren’t using landlordism for their primary income, are reluctant to get involved in long term letting because they know that if they get a problem tenant they are fccked.

Your typical scumbag landlord doesn’t fear this because doling out shit service, confronting tenants and generally being a shyster are par for the course.
