Orange light with bike and arrow spotted in Mechelen. Is it legal, and if so what does it mean?

  1. Never seen this in Belgium before so not sure if it’s legal nor of it’s exact meaning.

Not sure but I’m guessing you’re allowed to cross by going straight forward if it’s on, but are you also allowed to turn left or right? Better be safe than sorry so asking the collective who might be better aware of the road code than me, merci!

  2. >Thing seen at traffic light that clearly is intentional

    Is this legal?

Meaning: if this light is on, cyclists are allowed to cross the intersection to go straight on the condition that they do so safely (meaning: they keep granting passage to eventual others on that intersection)

  4. Uh… you can go while it’s red with these? Is that a plan to get cyclists killed?

Does it change colors or is it only orange? As a colorblind person I am being scared.

  5. This is a
‘conflict-vrij’ kruispunt in Mechelen. Basically, all bikers go at the same time in all 4 directions. It sucks btw. As bikers almost collide with bikers in all directions.

    Then pedestrians get green.

Then cars. For a few seconds.

At this crossing, exactly 2.5 cars (third one through orange), can drive in 1 green light cycle. Then it’s long wait again.

Results: frustrated car drivers and long traffic jams in Maurissabbestraat.

Source: I live close by and now hate living here.

  6. Yes this is legal and legit. I saw it pass in my driver’s license theoretical exam practices sometimes. It basically means that cyclists may cross if theres no incoming traffic iirc.
