A lot of Irish people don’t seem to realise that city centres are effectively full and the only way to get good public transport is to remove the car traffic that is blocking them

  1. The bus and luas are also full. At peak time it’s full of hard working people who pay their fare going to work and at lunch time it’s full of those with passes so they can access methadone. It’s also full of people playing their or their child’s music out loud. It’s also full of idiot teens with nothing else to do.. As someone with a disability which means I can’t drive, I would never willing use public transport if I’d another option.. Fight for your right to use your cars until the government provide transport police that actually work along with a transport experience that doesn’t make you wanna rip your hair out.

  2. this is true. But also, if one does not want to have a simple dichotomy, here are some things that are ready out of the box that could also help the flustercluk that is Dublin traffic:

    policies that favour:

ebikes over cars in the city centre

motorbikes and scooters over cars in the city centre

cars with an engine size under a certain CC or kerb weight over all cars in the city centre

  3. It’s not an issue of cars vs public transport per se but rather the fact that Irish towns and cities are so dispersed that public transport will never be particularly efficient – for a lot of people cars serve their needs better

  4. And the best way to do that is to redesignate driving lanes for use by pedestrians, buses, bikes, trams, etc. Congestion charges would not only unfair, but ineffective since you’d still have richer drivers taking up every lane, and holding back the public transport. Then there’s here’s also the fact that improving the buses and trams isn’t enough in a city of over a million. Dublin needs high-capacity off-street public transport like metro and heavy rail yesterday.

  5. How about like a proper plan for public transport that they stick to and bring in at time and reduce the car volume at the same time.

Most are against anything because it takes years to implement , and you would be suffering a long time before they made it possible to reasonable swap one with the other .

  6. I’m okay with removing the car traffic. When the wife wants to go to Dublin, it’s the drive that kills me/means I HAVE to go. If she could bus up, or both of us could, and not have to schedule the whole day around buses that occasionally just don’t exist, then perfect

  7. We want public transport below the ground. We need a good mix of light rail, busses, cycling, underground rail all linked together

  8. We can’t do anything to make public transport more reliable because doing so would involve taking cars off the road and we can’t do that because we need to make public transport more reliable before taking cars off the road.

  9. Or provide public transport. The eearliest bus to get me to work in my nearby city for 9 am departs at 9:15. I live 15 km from the city centre. Literally zero public busses suitable for commuting workers arriving from my direction. And that cunt Ryan thinks he’s doing a good job.

  10. Car space in city centres should be reserved for the disabled and vehicles engaged in commercial activities – commute not included. Any other use should be covered by public transport. However, our reliance on busses as the main form of PT in Dublin for example is a total pisstake as long as the busses need to sit in car traffic.

  11. I mean this is just not true, but regardless yes we need less car traffic in the city. Better public transport must come first though, that’s just the only way for it to work
