I wouldn’t say that it’s divided. Most of the people understand what was going on around JP2, for most of people in poland it wasn’t something new.
Just a small part of the society, mostly older ones, that were feed by this “JP2 propaganda” for the whole life, are now in shock.

Old people who lived under communism don’t care about hiding few cases of pedophilia. For them (making it super simple) pope released Poland from communism (meaning authoritarian governship and poverty based on its economic decisions and policies). Freedom for whole nation >>>> few cases of hidden pedophilia. It is personal for them because JP2s actions impacted their lives directly.
Young people treat JP2 more like a historical figure (like kings or knights from ancient times). They were born in free country, did not have to fight for freedom and take it as something granted and normal. For them its more like theoretical academic discussion about morality. And church is bad because it bans abortion now, so it also had to be bad back then.
These inability to understand another point of view is line of division in my opinion.

What is Wojtyla accused of? Not denouncing paedophile priests that would have been used by the communists to attack the Church, one of the levers for Polish independence?
He is probably guilty of that but it’s understandable in the context of the cold war.
It’s different from saying that known paedophiles were protected by him and were allowed to keep abusing children.

To those that say this doesn’t matter — societies always have to deal with this.
Basically, some person becomes idolized for whatever reason, everybody either forgets that they are a human and not some kind of God or bad stuff is discovered later, and finally people have to deal with the cognitive dissonance in some way. Most people will accept it and then deal with the thorny issue of how to teach and learn from reality. Others will take the copium and double down. The second option isn’t interesting or helpful.
For the rest of people that live in reality, how to move forward? Like I said, all societies deal with this — or try to. A good chunk of the USA’s founding fathers were slave owners. India’s Gandhi was a racist and a religious bigot. Japan basically acts as if nothing bad happened from 1910 to 1946.
There are good ways to deal with the cognitive dissonance and bad ways. I predict that the copium will fade as the generations that idolized JP2 fade away — probably the next decade or two.
At this point it’s like a free jackpot if you accuse pope of hiding pedos. It doesn’t matter which pope. The only thing I can be thankful for JP2 are religion lessons during which we didn’t have to listen teacher’s mumbling and could pretend to watch shitty animations about the pope.
