From Krispy Kreme to Newbridge Silverware: the companies paying dividends while on taxpayer Covid subsidies

  1. “The Government is considering changing the law to stop companies in receipt of State supports from paying shareholders”

Might be a bit late for that now

  2. More clumsily written laws. Between laws and public capital investment contracts our government arms absolutely unable to prevent the state from bleeding money out the ears

  3. Jim O’Callaghan asked about this issue 18 months ago but was rebuffed. Jesus Christ. Any idea that they didn’t see this coming can now be rebuffed too.

  4. On a related note I saw a list of covid related bailouts for European airlines and any conditions that went with them. Many of the big ones had stipulations about dividends, but of course the one for Ryanair had no conditions whatsoever.

  5. Leo Varadkar says any companies that received Covid wage supports but paid dividends should repay the money. Irish Examiner

Fat chance of that happening Leo.

Varadkar was Taoiseach when subsides where brought in.

  6. Yet the employees who had their pay bolstered have been hit with hefty tax bills.

Mate had been given a €3,000 tax bill, nice xmas pressie .

  7. If that was someone on the PUP payment, 10x more people would be outraged and the government would jail them until they pay it back. But FFG don’t care when it’s corporations or rich people shanking the system (AKA welfare for the 1%).
