  1. Right after I graduated high school, I went on a trip to Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland with a friend of mine. He was an exchange student from Germany.

There were so many brutal realities that hit you in the face: the bullet holes, chipped mortar, leveled buildings throughout the area, and cratered out city blocks that had not been rebuilt yet following WWII.

I was honestly floored to go from old-West Berlin to what had been East Berlin. It was almost like another country.

But then when we got to Poland, it was so depressing and eye-opening, that I spent those three days not knowing whether to scream in rage or cry in despair. It was as alien as it was desultory.

Now, when I see some 20-year-old lunatic on Twitter extolling the old Soviet Union, I want to digitally smack them through the phone. The life of privation was brutal under the CCCP.

In the west you tended to just hear about their lack of liberties etc. What they really should have done was just shown everyone a driving tour of Lodz or Warsaw to get the message through.

  2. > compares a picture from 60 years ago to a picture from last year

    > Says the 60 year old picture is actually 30 year old

    > Great success at fearmongering!

  3. OP, do you have any source on this first picture? I have a hard time believing it’s from 1990, especially by looking at those Warszawas. My guess would be the 70s or late 60s.

  4. This is not a 1990 picture. The cars are giveaways. Most likely recollored picture from 60-70. if it was 90s you would see mostly Fiats 126p and Polonez.

  5. Back in the past when colors were a thing. You probably could guess the country just by the car models.

Grey colors and the same brands everywhere is the new style.
