‘Train class warfare’: Train first-class criticism dismissed by €35 million annual profit

  1. Heh, I always take 1st class for two reasons:
    * I almost always have a guaranteed spot (near the window)
    * It’s always a lot more quiet in there
Worth the extra cost for me (I have audiosensory issues)
Fuck anyone that complains tbh. Just rename them to quiet/comfort sections.

  3. Unacceptable. This is Belgium, we are a country of redistribution and equality. Things should be equally shitty for everyone.

  4. Doesn’t civil servants gets first class subscriptions from their employer?

So it is a transfer off funds. State money to state company and perks for state people.

    Edit: this stopped in 2017.

  5. Last time we went 1st class from Zaventem to Kortrijk. It was not overly busy. Monday afternoon in august. In short: a lot of people were randomnly coming in and out. Most of them very well aware they had no ticket for 1st class. Some of them fully unaware (it’s not very noticeable that you are sitting in 1st class anyhow, though if you can read signs it is…).

Only after passing Ghent (almost home) there was 1 conductor pointing all of them to 2nd class.

    So far for the quiet…

  6. They’re socialists when they need a bailout but are capitalists when there is a profit.

    NMBS is a garbage company.

“After all, we are a business” is mijns inziens exact waar het probleem zit. De trein is openbare dienstverlening!

  8. In the end, you´ll be just as late or unable to get to your destination in first class as in second class. But, at least you won´t be surrounded by the other losers.

  9. The problem isn’t the existence of first class per se, it’s that there aren’t always enough wagons in second class (especially during summer) where everyone is cramped while first class is empty and you’ll need to literally pass out before you can sit there.

But it’s good to know it’s profitable so now travellers have their way of protesting against nmbs: block first class, use it as a party or fart wagon, …

  10. Profit proves there is a demand for it, but the amount of empty seats proves that this demand is smaller than the provided amount of seats.

So here’s a solution that pleases everyone: limit the amount of first class space on each train.

  12. I would probably not go to work in Brussels if I had to sit in second class every single day for approximately an hour and a half. First class makes my daily commute at least somewhat bearable.

Autoreizen is zo ordinair.

  14. “first class”. Still no WiFi and no charging points at the seats. The only advantage is that you’ll always have a seat available.

  15. I guess this applies to short range trains only?

When I went on a ski vacation to France by train, first class was packed as hell. This was on a Sunday, tho. Return trip was on a Thursday, it was surprisingly still packed. (–edit: specifically the bit from Paris via Brussels, Liege and then at least up to the next train station to home.)

  16. Train is a public service. You should get the exact same service regardless of your income, that’s the essence of public services.

Looking at revenue from first class without looking at its cost makes no sense. First class wagon are most of the time nearly empty, so you carry one for nothing. I doubt the energy cost is accounted here. Also is increases pressure on the rest of the train, if I wouldn’t pay my trip each time I must stand in the corridors (and there is an empty first class), I wouldn’t pay 95% of the times, which again is not accounted in this annual profit.

  17. First class ik neem het nooit op sommige treinen heb last van de stoffige geur op sommige treinmodellen.

Verder whats the added value voor de meerprijs…

  18. I hate the class warfare when I’m being passed by an electric bike while I’m pushing my acoustic bike. How dare they pay more and get a superior product.

  19. Ahja, in those new dubbledecks you get nice quilled lether seats soundproof boards and a decent table. Kinda nice if you want to do some work.
