  1. Prime Minister Sanna Marin (sd) tells Iltalehti that Finland is ready to join NATO immediately after Turkey and Hungary have ratified Finland’s membership in the defense alliance.

    – Nationally, we have all the conditions for a very quick process, as long as these ratifications are done, Marin confirms.

According to IL’s information, the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö plans to sign the NATO law approved by the parliament on Thursday, March 23.

At the same time, Niinistö and Marin’s government decide that Finland will join NATO.

When all member countries have ratified Finland’s membership, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg invites Finland to join NATO in his letter.

    **Quick deposit**

However, Finland will only become a member of NATO when Finland’s accession documents are deposited in the vaults of the US State Department in Washington.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland has to deliver the papers to the US capital itself.

When the vault door first opens and then closes, Finland is a full member of NATO.

Marin’s reference to a “very quick process” means that Finland will become a NATO member in a few days after the two missing ratifications are ready.

    – Turkey has said that they intend to process Finland’s NATO membership application and ratify it before their elections. We expect that this will also happen, Marin answers the question, what knowledge does he have as prime minister about the schedules of Turkey and Hungary.

Diplomatic sources have told IL that, in similar situations, the Turkish parliament has implemented President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s will in 3-4 days.

    **From Hungary the exact date**

Marin says that he received exact information from Hungary when the country will ratify Finland’s membership.

    – The Prime Minister of Hungary has said that this will happen on March 27. This is our schedule information at the moment. Of course, we can only breathe a sigh of relief when the ratifications are done, says Marin.
