what is the end goal here, make it so no one can even afford to rent?
Last year the rent on my flat went from £600 to £800. Managed to buy a house and move out. That flat is now on the market at 1100. It is not worth that a month.
Like my friend is stuck in a relationship that doesn’t work. He would like to move out, but he can’t afford and so his partner. Option for him is to put all his stuff in the storage and rent a room in a flat share and his partner to get a lodger if landlord permits. When he said that he started crying “I am in my fucking 40s and I can’t even afford to live alone on my own. I feel like a failure.”. Seems like a situation without an easy way out.
This happened to me 7 years ago and it’s only been getting worse.
Fortunately I make a lot more now and could move back to the city if I wanted to, but I’m not gonna waste my money.
Who replaces them? They can only be replaced by tenants, unless the house is flogged
“signs”?
Hasn’t this been happening for, like, two decades now?
So an estate agent (and another Foxtons) say people are being priced out. Yet part of the reason is the practices estate agents use, which inflate prices.
I am just baffled as to why people affected by this don’t seem to exercise any political clout on this issue? Isn’t “there aren’t enough houses a good reason to vote differently?”
This isn’t new
It’s just now affecting the middle classes
There are too many people who are able to pay almost whatever is asked. And the rich will continue to get richer.
What’s the solution?
A big factor in all this as well is speed of news, landlords now effectively have infinite upward support on rents. The tools we use to find property are being used for upward pressure, the landlords are constantly now checking what properties on their street are renting for and matching the highest, time gone it used to be a lot harder to find out that information and landlords would internally have to decide what market rent was.
Houses stopped being homes decades ago. They have become assets to be traded on the free market, and in the UK, the conservatives have been artificially inflating house prices as homeowners are more likely to vote for them.
Oh? What were the signs? Was it the prices? or the idea that a house should be shared via the number of rooms it has BUT not have the cost reduced? The idea a room in London should be around £800 a month (That’s be generous) IS A FUCKING JOKE.

Simple shit, Councils are to blame, they know how many homes they have in their boundaries but they don’t give a shit because they can charge per household council tax, they’re also the one that approve a house being turned into flat and the ones that approved houses being house shares.

You’re fucked if you’re single, so have fun, this also ultimately either causes men to go Homeless or force women to remain in potentially abusive relationships.
This isn’t new by any means. Brighton rents have been ridiculous for the last 20 years. £1000 for a two bed flat showbox in an average part of town in 2006.
Imagine how great it’d be if we made it easier to build, and then doubled down on council house construction.
A supply problem needs a supply solution, not endless stoking of demand.
But who is renting them then? No landlord wants empty properties so there must be swathes of people who can afford it? But who and how?! Or are people just seeing even more disposable income swallowed up
Once people realise they can charge anything and no one can stop them and government and media will get them to think it’s anyone but their fault it’s a lost cause. Moving out does seem the only option. Vote with you prescene and let the cities wither. But will they? Doubt it.
Older generations will still complain about adults living at home beyond what has been traditional for the last few decades. Doing so is the only way I can save for a deposit, otherwise it is at least one third of my wages to rent a shoe-box room in a house share in the worst part of town. Some might say independence is better but why live like that when I get on well with my mum? We’d both love for things to change but we are also realistic and know we are fighting against a system that is rigged against that happening.
Should see it here in Bristol it’s a joke!
Second most expensive city in the counter outside of London and full of student accommodation!
I’m guessing they’re getting the most out of the students to get the best return on investment but it’s ruining the city
No shit. In other news, water is wet and the Pope is flirting with Catholicism
Not just cities, everywhere, coastal towns, quaint little villages in the countryside, big cities.
Tbh with technology we should be leaving the major cities to the regions where we can enjoy the countryside, people that aren’t battered by city life and breathe fresh air. If u want to cluster in the cities and pay sky-high rents (like I am), then u have to earn big bucks, or else u can have a brilliant quality of life in the country.
Trust me, there are lovely places that aren’t in London… I promise it’s true. U can still use Uber and even get amazon deliveries.
We flood to the cities and get ripped off…well, either u enjoy the perks of city life and pay the premium, or u enjoy the perks of provincial living and pay the premiums. Either way, it’s your choice.
I’ll be leaving the city soon as I can easily get a 3 bedroom house to rent (or even on mortgage payments) less than I pay now.
Our London landlord is upping our rent 35% in June. A 2 bed flat in Wembley Park, zone 4, for £2,750 a month + bills.
People gave been warning governments for decades that those is where things were going but the rich were making money so no fucks were given then. Now its coming home to roost.
Londoners all moving north cash rich, 150k Hong Kong people buying multiple properties to rent out, Chinese investors buying up everything, the list goes on. My home a flat just been sold new owners turning it back into a large house lived here 20yrs same as another 2 tennants people don’t give a shit.
In London prices would triple or double for rent in the space of a year for a lot of bullshit reasons. If your pay never increased in that time you’d be downgrading with every move and flat sharing with more people. Full time office workers living in student style accommodation too.
Meanwhile rental and short term let market with slumlords has degraded quality of homes because they do as little renovations as possible and cover up cracks and damage than fix it. Probably killing the businesses that improve housing quality with repairs too
One of the bigger challenges is the number of private landlords selling up with lots of rental property being taken off the market. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sharp increase in homelessness this year – simply too few properties for people wanting to live in London now.
Is it me or has this post been infested with bots? So many garbage replies. More than usual I mean.
