Fintan O’Toole: Enoch Burke’s legal campaign might actually do Ireland some good

  1. You’d hope that the laws/rules about those allowed home-school their kids become much stricter so that there isn’t a repeat of this scenario in the future.

  2. > all the judges who have heard his cases have indeed sworn oaths that they will take their direction from (presumably the same) God.

My sky daddy could beat up your sky daddy.

  3. This seems a bit of a stretch. Yes our laws need to be more (i.e. completely) secular, but no that doesn’t mean that you can currently do whatever you like on the basis of your wacky religious beliefs (Enoch isn’t even a Catholic).

  4. > But the enshrining of piety has real force.

I say as I first reach for a hypothetical and then a 40 year old example. Fine, remove the references but don’t engage with this theater that it actually means anything.

  5. Religion and law need to be separate.. if you’re religious, that is wonderful for you. However, there is no reason for it to affect the rest of the population
