we destroyed our native forests to plant eucalyptus for the toilet paper industry 🙂 they grow fast and drain every drop of water off of the ground, then drop poisonous leaves that kill earthworms and poison the ground so nothing else grows on it, and they love fire, igniting on a spark and exploding seeds everywhere, so after one burns down ten spring up in its place. also they’re the ugliest tree on earth and their wood is crap for everything but paper.
they smell nice tho
In the first picture they’re burnt pine trees (Pinus pinaster; the ones with visible pine cones), and adult eucalyptus (E. globulus; the ones with leaves growing on the trunk). In the second picture, the small trees in rows are young eucalyptus, sometimes used for reforestation.
Thats the result of deregulation of forest management, the search for quick profit no matter what and the absence of state owned forest (of which portugal has the lowest % in europe).
Burnt
Ahh o Eucalyptus, o carrasco da flora portuguesa
Eucalyptus in planted area.
A forest stand refers to a group of trees that are similar in age, species composition, density, size, and site quality. A forest stand can be a distinct unit within a larger forested area, and it is often managed as a single entity.
Forest stands are typically classified based on their age, with three main categories being young stands (0-20 years), intermediate stands (20-60 years), and mature stands (60+ years). Other factors that can influence the classification of a forest stand include the size and shape of the area, the quality of the soil, and the presence of other vegetation.
Understanding the characteristics of forest stands is important for forest management and conservation, as it can help inform decisions about harvesting, reforestation, and the protection of biodiversity.
Because of scarity of toilet papel, Portugal was to destroy native florest to aswer the demand.
