[Blades/scheermesjes like these](https://preview.redd.it/7n3kysolqwoa1.jpg?width=500&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=6621da2ae13d0eb663314e9ea1f9293050634fec) that fit a double edge safety razor are in theory a more sustainable shaving solution than disposable razors; in some places, you can collect the steel blades in a jar and take them to a recycling centre.

Does anyone here have any experience doing this in the Netherlands? I have a collection of used blades and would prefer to recycle them than bin them. Thanks in advance.

  1. I’ve made a container out of a closed up PVC pipe with a slot in one of the ends. That’s been taking a couple of years to fill up and I’ve been pushing the decision of what to do with it ahead of me.

You could your local pharmacy (apotheek, not a drogist) for a sharps container though and ask if they’ll take it back when it’s full. You could also give your local waste management people a call (the ones that empty your wheelie bins) and see what they want with those.

It think they might treat it as contaminated waste, like hypodermic needles and stuff like that.

  2. these are recycled are used steel/scrap metal, not for repair/reuse as razorblades.

It would be too much of a health hazard to use re-owned razorblades.

  3. Find the metal container at your nearest ‘milieustraat’ and dump it in. Personally, I don’t bother.

  4. We have a PMD container in the neighborhood but I don’t like throwing them in there directly because they are sharp and I don’t know if people handle the trash in any way. Also, they can easily cut the bag, spilling stuff everywhere.

So my solution was to put them all in an old shampoo bottle that I made a slot in, and I’ve labeled ‘scheermesjes’. When it was full I threw it in the PMD bin.

Not ideal but it worked. Back in the 70s they sometimes made a slot in the wall so they’d end up in the spouw. Don’t do that though. I tore open a wall when renovating and guess what came out

  5. Oud ijzer boer/ scrap yard… My dad and also my husband uses them
    .
We take a metal piggy bank. Once full we give it to them. They drive around here every week. You can give anything metal to them.

  6. Isn’t the sole reason they’re collected separately elsewhere because they’re sharp?

The amount of metal is negligible, after all.

  7. In some homes there used to be a sloth in the wall where you could put them in. They just went into the wall and thats it.

  8. Where i live all metal can go in the plastic wheelie bin 🙂 but you can also go to a metal dealer/scrapyard and get some money for it. But it has to be a lot 🙂
