Oxfam’s Inclusive Language Guide advises avoid ‘mother’ and ‘youth’

  1. A inclusive language guide for those who write pieces happens to use inclusive language.

Shock and horror whoever would have thought.

Most of these are useful to everyone in society anyway. Just some examples

Parenthood not mother hood or father hood. How often do hetro and cis couples find unfair differences in society just due to the cultural designation of certain roles; responsibilities or rights as being for the mother or the father. All before getting down to trans; non binary; polycules; and everyone else that doesnt fit the conservative standard.

Sanitary products being called menstrual products. No shit sherlock make it actually accurate.

People who menstruate; oh hey not all women menstruate cis or not so why purposefully tie women to reproductive cycles. You know the thing that is often used by conservatives to try and strip rights away. Maybe let’s make language specific rather than needlessly generic in a way that can be abused by conservative idiots. See America currently.

Oh and as Oxfam themselves say it’s not even prescriptive but just a **literal guide**.
Quick call the army; a guide is making suggestions how could such ever allowed.

  2. From the language guide:

“If individual parents have a preference for a role name, to respect their choice”

So default to parent, if a parent has a preference, respect it.

    How ghastly /s

  3. There’s terms like “de-colonising language” but it’s just that they’re saying they will use vague non specific catch-all corporate speak like every other company on earth has since the 90’s.

  4. The oxford mail were big supporters of those right wing conspiracy theorist nut jobs who organized the anti “everything that seems to be a bit modern” march in Oxford wasting a few thousand hours of police time and presumably tens of thousands of pounds of tax payers money. They also made me late for lunch, so they can go fuck themselves.

  5. Why does all this “inclusive” shit do nothing but spend it’s time excluding stuff.

    We’re inclusive.
We’ve excluded this and that and those and whatever these are.
There’s nothing left. Everything’s been excluded.
    Yay, inclusion!

  6. Words like ‘mother’ are so toxic. Today I gave the person with a cervix who birthed me a ‘happy parent #2’ card instead. Then I gave myself 10 lashes on the back for partaking in the sexist event at all This stuff isn’t difficult

  7. If people are uncomfortable using a “Colonising language” it would be interesting to see a list of languages belonging to countries that have never invaded or colonised anyone else then we could maybe just use those.

The UK has been invaded/colonised many times from the Beaker people, Celts, Saxons etc etc.

Africa has had conflicts between tribes and societies for thousands of years.

All through Europe and Asia various peoples have fought to dominate other peoples.

Even South America, which was presumably unpopulated when the first homo-sapiens arrived then had a series of military empires that fought and enslaved/subjugated their neighbours, until the tragic arrival of Europeans with weapons and diseases.

I don’t know but perhaps the Aboriginal people of Australia are one of the few that were peaceful and free of this till the European’s arrived.

Ironically “English” has a lot of foreign words incorporated into it and the English have lost control over the language, it has become a globalised language with the Americans having a much greater influence.

  8. >The guide advises staff to say ‘breastfeeding people, people who breastfeed

    Chestfeeding

    >It says to avoid using ‘sanitary products, feminine hygiene’ and instead say ‘menstrual products and period products

    Mxnstrual products

    >We are proud of using inclusive language; we won’t succeed in tackling poverty by excluding marginalised groups.”

FFS. It’s language *of* inclusivity, and groups *of* marginalisation

    Oxfam, cheese lighting bigots!
