Ukraine labels German wholesaler Metro as sponsor of war

  1. And I label as sponsors of war:

    * The Dutch ING, Philips, Heineken
    * The Austrian Raiffeisen
    * The French Auchan

  2. I would like to comment on banks. As long as there are still corporations doing business with Russia, wholesale bank operations still need to be processed by a bank, preferably the bank where the company already has a credit line and accounts. If for example, Heineken does FX transactions to buy/sell commodities or products in Russia, they need a bank… is that simple. Banks do a lot more than process your paycheck and put money in the ATM.

  3. Kretinsky seems to be a real a**hole. He basicly owns most of Germanys eastern lignite mines and power plants, some of the worst in the EU, makes a lot of money with Russian gas even after the invasion and well he owns 30% of Metro as well.

    Why would I not be surprised if he is also responsible for proping up right wing Putin loving groups in Czechia.

  4. Note: In a number of countries (CZ, ES, NL, PL, PT), Metro Cash & Carry operates under the Makro brand.

    Here in NL, Makro is a wholesaler that charges retail prices to business owners – only the food service industry gets a discount. Their business model is that they’re allowed to run superstores while supermarket chains aren’t.

  5. I said it when Nestle and Auchan were accused and I will repeat myself:

    __Companies selling food are not sponsoring the Russian war of agression.__

    It is Russian citizens buying food and then the foreign company taking 10% of that money out of Russia as profits. Similarly, if the food is imported from outside Russia, even more money is leaving the Russian economy. In exchange they get expensive European luxury food brands. Capital is leaving Russia. No war-related goods enter Russia.

    The stated goal of sanctions is to hinder the Russian war effort and punish Russian leaders.

    How is a Russian buying Coca-Cola for 2€ instead of knock-off кока-кола for 1€ helping the Russian war effort? It isn’t even making Russian oligarchs rich, it is making EU ‘oligarchs’ rich.

    The sated goal of EU is not to starve Russians or make their lives miserable.

    Ukraine should focus on the evil countries still sponsoring the Russian war effort by buying Russian nuclear fuel or allowing the transit of Russian gas through their pipelines.

  6. Funny that one of Metro hypermarkets which was near Donetsk airport got raided and destroyed by russians / separatists back in 2014. There are memes about that being “metro liberation day” and photos of separatists drinking big bottles of jack daniels

  7. Are we at the point where Ukraine can accuse literally everything? They already have enough pity points, its why they won Eurovision.
