The liberum veto was a practice that allowed any member of the Sejm (the Commonwealth’s parliament) to unilaterally block the passage of legislation, often leading to political paralysis. If the Commonwealth had managed to overcome this issue and withstand pressures from neighboring powers like Russia, Austria, and Prussia, the geopolitical dynamics of the region could have been significantly different.
