I just wanted to say: uh, yeah, nah, we ALWAYS hated eating bitter, that’s why afaik they always put heaps of sugar (or other sweetners, depending on availability) in witloof dishes, because it was fucking disgusting. Thank you for this fascinating tidbit, Radio2’s De Inspecteur.

  1. I like eating it raw, it still has some inherent sweetness then, but fuck cooked, that shit is vile.

  2. Anti-bitter person here as well. Coffee, Schweppes, grapefruit, witloof, … all very disgusting to me.

  3. I always loved bitter or sour more than sweet, so give me all the bitter witloof.

Putting sugar on witloof should be a crime.

  4. It’s one of our national treasures! Just had two “stronkjes” during lunch even, shredded and put between my sandwich.

Adding sugar to it is a big no-no. Just let it caramelise and braise it in a big chunk of butter, slowly, over the course of an hour or two. Bliss!

If you really can’t stand it, you can take a small bit of the core out, since that’s the most bitter part. I personally don’t mind it.

  5. On the same page, I noticed the increased sweetness with mangoes, corn and tomato.

Mangoes became less acid, same as tomatoes, they lost flavor. Corn is.so overwhelmingly sweet now that my husband refuses the eat.

  6. Humans have been selectively breeding leafy vegetables to be less bitter for the entirety of agriculture. I don’t see what the story here is.

  8. sweetener? the most sweetener I know is that the apple chunks have to be chopped a few hours before they go together in the yoghurt

also both ham and cheese aren’t sweet

personally, it’s sad, I’ve always hated witloof but that was a me-problem and my parents and brothers loved it, the fact that they can’t eat the original anymore saddens me

  9. Moete is blaadjes in rode wijn en zoet maken volgens een van mijn fancy chef vrienden

Ikzelf drink mijn koffie s morgens zwart–
Eet mijn chocolate zo puur mogelijk–

  10. I love cookies, but have yet to find cookie flavoured vegetables. There are vegetable flavored cookies but that’s the wrong way around 🙁
    Make this possible, someone please.

  11. Sugar on witloof, hell no. But, when it comes to the holy triangle of meat, veggies and potatoes, I think that just adding more salt to your potatoes does wonders with witloof.

Witloof and horse steak was my childhood lol.
