Passport office workers to strike for five weeks over pay dispute

  1. I live in France and I was going to change my British passport because it only has 10 months left in it. Sod it, I’ll just use my Irish one until this is resolved. **Happy St. Patrick’s Day!**

  2. Sent mine 1 week ago. In processing. Hopefully back before strikes. Not like I have to go anywhere though.

  3. I’ve just sent my EU passport and naturalisation certificate 2 days ago for my first British passport and hopefully to get everything in time for holiday in June.

  4. This is why I’m in favour of having IDs in this country. To renew your passport you have to send it by post. Not sure how many other countries force citizens to do this whilst not having any other official method of identification (unless you happen to be a driver).

  5. I wonder if their pay has increased in line with the renewal cost. Who am I kidding? I know it hasn’t.

  6. Guess I’ll be renewing mine sooner rather than later for a trip in the next month-ish. Thankfully mine expires in September so should be fine for Europe.

Edit: Nevermind I have to send it in right?

  7. Time for a general strike! To hell with Thatcher’s ancient laws; these are crazy times where people can’t afford the bare minimum while the PM lives it up.

  8. Meh, worked on the phones for hmpo. Minimum wage. Angry people shouting at me constantly because their passport has taken more than a week or the photo they sent through was of some bullcrap not themselves. Think what the rest get who don’t deal with people at all is fair

  9. The passport office are going to have to strike longer than that to get anyone to notice. Management are just going to send all the applications back saying they’re showing too many teeth or some shit.

  10. I just had mines renewed last month and it took 10 days.

If you need it I’d recommend doing it now, like today, and you might be alright

  11. Cant wait to see the headlines of people saying the strikes ruined their holiday because they didnt get their passport back in time. But also only applied a month before they went abroad

  12. Thank fuck i sent my daughter’s renewal at the beginning of March.

Just got the message from the courier that they’ll be delivering the passport today, but also a message from HMPO that they’re printing a new passport and will be sending it soon.

I do wonder if the courier is just delivering the old passport though……

  13. it’s unclear from the things I’ve read. Are they saying a single 5 week long strike? Or like 5 weeks worth of strikes of a day or two at a time?

  14. I think we should also just keep in mind WHY these strikes are happening. I’ve just seen the news reporting on it, and folk are angry they won’t get to go to Greece or whatnot. There are workers going to food banks to feed their kids because they can not afford to live. Your holiday is a fucking privilege.

Yes, there will be delays, and yes, people’s holidays will be disrupted, but the country is facing a cost of living crisis, and people need to eat.

To the guy who told ITV News “everyone should just get back to work”: sort your priorities and stop being so arrogant. Blame the Tories for this mess, not the people fighting just to afford heating, electric and food.

  15. This will absolutely fuck me. I have to renew soon for a trip in May. I hope I have enough time, but I’m away currently so cannot do it till April.
