Royal Mail referred to regulator over ‘systemic letter delivery failures’

  1. Well of course. They’re making a loss now, their staff (rightly) don’t want their pay cut, RM can’t afford it, the staff are striking, so post isn’t getting delivered, there’s big backlogs, a randomware attack, and generally the cost of doing their business going up while demand for their business is going down.

If the government deems RM ‘Critical National Infrastructure’, then they should treat it as the public service it is and renationalise it. That way they can be in direct control of macro strategy, and absorb the associated costs.

  2. Darren Jones is doing a great job holding Thompson’s (smarmy so-and-so) feet to the fire. Only the letter business is in decline, parcel delivery is growing.

  3. First Class used to be next day delivery. Now it’s 3-5 working days and you have to go and find the hedge they left it in yourself. Tell me again how privatisation was a good thing

  4. RM should never have been made private, a core basic thing like sending post to & from citizens should be public & not for profit ffs!

  5. Mail is getting deprioritised. Parcels (especially Tracked) are taken out while letters are left in the office. The CEO says RM don’t do this, but they bloody well do.

Poor posties are overworked and can’t finish on time, so your mail is getting delayed so RM can deliver the more profitable parcels.

  6. Maybe they could try privatising it *even more*. Like privatisation 2.0 or something.

I mean, whenever they find any other given policy of theirs not working their answer is ‘we’re just not doing it hard enough’ so why not now?

  7. I regularly get mail for a different property, the only thing we have in common is house number and the actual town. Everything else is completely different, postcode, street name etc and to compound things, I’ve had important medical post not be delivered so obviously gone to the other property and they didn’t have the morals to return to sender or something.

I’ve complained and yet it still happens.

The royal mail is an out of date institution and it is only a matter of time until it fails.

  8. A service like Royal Mail was never supposed to be privatized, the current business model just doesn’t support it.

In order to compete with the likes of DPD, Evri etc they have to adapt which unfortunately means a drastic change in the terms & conditions.

  9. I’m delivering parcels on 2 rounds today. No mail is going out on those rounds.

Now tell me royal mail isn’t prioritising parcels.

  10. The union has ruined Royal Mail. I didn’t agree with the sell off, but ultimately, it happened. The union still treats it like they’re a government run monopoly, and can’t face the reality that they haven’t been for 10 years.

There are better services than Royal Mail (DPD, DHL) and there are cheaper services than Royal Mail (evri etc). They had the best name brand, but this has now been ruined.

If a unions job is to work in the best interest of their members, I would argue that having a job is better than not having a job, and the Royal Mail being folded and 80% of the staff losing their jobs is absolutely a realistic possibility now. I don’t see a way for them to recover in their current format. I also don’t see them renationalising it, because there fundamentally isn’t a requirement anymore for a nationally owned delivery service, given the competitors.

  11. I have to send letters by RD all the time at my work. 9/10 times we get zero update from RM, no indication if delivery was ever attempted. When they do deliver it, more often than not they sign for the letters themselves, completely invalidating the point. It’s unbelievable how useless they are.

  12. Parcelforce (owned by rm) held my international parcel from America worth £100 for 3 months, never sent me customs charge letters (or if they did, they were lost and made no other effort to contact me), damaged my parcel and then returned it to the sender. The parcel now seems to be lost and parcel force won’t take any accountability. This was a gift from my partner so I did not have access to the tracking information to attempt to resolve their fuck up at an earlier date. Fuck royal mail and fuck parcelforce. I avoid them at every opportunity now.

  13. I cancelled a lost bank card at 10am yesterday, and got the replacement today via RM. Happy with my service in general, and I sympathise with them when they strike.
