The cost of existing in this country is appalling.
In 2019 we imported nearly 110 thousand cars from the UK. Last year we imported just under 41 thousand.
Vat and VRT? Its robbery.
The government could have abolished VRT when VAT was introduced. They choose greed and to screw us to the wall with those on the lowest incomes taking the gut punch.

We don’t manufacture any cars here. Every vehicle on this island was imported at some point.
Registration should be a flat rate fee. Not some ever changing fee based on initial cost, emissions, engine size, depth of the Liffey, whether they like you, and God knows what else.

I’d have zero problem with all taxes being waived on vehicles like this with a genuine need.
As the Americans understand, “If You Want Less Of Something, Tax It!” So our Government must want a lower quality of life for people with disabilities otherwise these type of vehicles would be tax exempt.

The vrt calculator to import my car from the north is €5475 on a 17 year old car worth €2k. Surly it’s greener to keep old cars running longer, I mean you don’t solve an over consumption issue by consuming more. It’s an old car but I get 57mpg out of it and I would probably get less from a more modern car. Let’s face it if the tax take were to go down from cars producing less NOx then the government would tax PM2.5 or some other emission. There is no alternative to car transport for most people in Ireland. The government are a pack of cunts.
This is bullshit and a ridiculous discrepancy that ought to have been foreseen in the legislation. And ok, McGrath is tied down about waiving the VAT, but there’s precedent for refunding the VAT. Governments did it with Band Aid records in the eighties. That’s the least they could do now. But as most disabled people don’t have forty grand knocking round spare anyone in this position should be able to get a note to give to the Revenue when they import their modified car saying the VAT on this vehicle will be covered directly by the Dept of Finance.
NOX is the actual killer. My car would be 4200 in NOX alone to import. That’s before VRT and VAT
