Killers with history of coercive behaviour face tougher sentences

  1. “….this will mean ‘Longer sentences for people who kill women in the home’”

“…The announcement recognises the gendered nature of these crimes, and the fact they are often part of wider patterns of domestic abuse,”

Oh look more gender based sentencing. (Unless for some reason lesbians are being targeted)

    Really feeling that ‘male privilege’.

  2. I still think we have a serious issue in this country with the sentencing and punishment of serious crimes.

I don’t think any sensible person, when they sit down and think about, think teenage joyriders need years in prison – and it’s clear that there is a huge need for calm and collected sentencing at the lower range of crimes, and sentencing such that we take people out of the cycle and therefore criminal justice system through rehabilitation.

However, it’s always seemed to me that our system massively lacks the ramp up capability to protect the public from seriously dangerous people. And it keeps, continually, getting it wrong.

Look at Joseph McCann (and I suggest you don’t ever read the sentencing remarks) – the guy (Edit: initially – it was increased on appeal) got 30 years (minimum) for a series of brutal rapes and kidnappings, including raping a 17 year old and 11 year old in front of their mother. How is this not sufficient to be attracting a whole of life sentence? Why, at the age of 41, should that 11 year old be left wondering if he is going to be released? I don’t care if he “might” never be released, I don’t care that he has to pursuade a parole board – he, frankly, should never have the chance.

Again, look at the likes of John Worboy – he was due to be released, until public pressure forced a U-Turn. What of the victims who don’t get the news and public pressure on their side? It’s sickening.

There are crimes you can’t undo, and there are crimes where I sincerely believe you can not be rehabilitated. More to the point, there are crimes where at no point in their life, the victims should ever have to wake up to the possibility of their attacker being out. And here, I include the family of people whose loved ones are so brutally killed.

The justice system needs a cliff edge, and we need to be much stronger at saying “no more” to those who perpetuate such brutal violence, and who ruin so many lives.

  3. Absolutely pointless law, as usual. Government pretending they care about domestic violence because they want to win an election.

Meanwhile, women will go to the police repeatedly and NOTHING will be done to protect them.
