  3. What are the rules about collective firing? Is there a point where Delhaize can just say “You know what, go fuck yourselves. We close our shops.”?

  4. Unpopular opinion: Delhaize is doing nothing wrong and is doing what they need to do ensure the viability of Delhaize as a business, and in turn, keep many people in the retail branch employed there on the long-term. Sacrifice some jobs to ensure that the business as a whole remains viable on the long-term.

People have the right to having a liveable wage, that is without question. But it’s not a private company’s job to keep people employed just because they can and in turn compromise their business. The retail grocery market in Belgium is extremely competitive and oversaturated. It was set in stone that some companies would try to optimize their business structure. You can’t blame a company that is just doing its job in navigating this business environment within the economic framework that our politicians have set out for them.

If people don’t like this model, then they should NOT direct their anger towards private companies who are just operating within the framework that the political system have provided for them.

  5. Frans Muller, CEO of Ahold has imported the negotiation customs of the US to the Netherlands and Belgium. Before the merger of Delhaize with Albert Hein, relations between the employees and the Delhaize direction was not always like it should, but there was a mutual respect and a desire to play the game in accordance with the Belgium social negotiation model. The latter has been thrown out with the introduction of the US hardliner habits by mr Muller.

  6. Delhaize is making a complete mess of this entire situation. And the worst of it all: they are probably Well prepared for this scenario. As an international Group they just van take the loss as long as they win and succeed to optimize the cost model. That’s why I will stick to a local player: Colruyt.
