Just watching the [Afroman saga](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/23/ohio-police-sue-rapper-afroman) in the US and was also starting to wonder “who is going to help me pay for my door and my gate”?
As a homeowner it makes me wonder what my options would be if it ever happened like that (not that I expect or intend on being raided anytime soon lol). If a raid is carried out at my house, and it was either a mistake on the police’s part or I was not found guilty of any wrongdoing what are my options legally for damage to my property?
In general though, even if I was a criminal, who pays for the damage? I mean, let’s say I’m living at my grandmother’s house and they have no idea I’m a criminal, but now their home has been damaged. Are they expected to pay to have the damaged repaired?
Please entertain the hypothetical scenario and treat rather than compare the US to Germany because that is out of the scope of my question.
