IPSO clears Mail on Sunday for ‘deadnaming’ of trans Penny Mordaunt supporter

  1. Not only is using her deadname irrelevant to the story, it’s also incredibly disrespectful. Given how basically all names in English are gendered, it’s considered an important step for many trans people to choose a name that they feel represents them.

Publishing it in a widely read article gives the people already harassing her another tool to mock her identity. At the very least IPSO shows a complete misunderstanding of how trans people are targeted verbally.

  2. Expecting even minimal decency – let alone honesty – from the Mail group is a fools errand, so I’m not disappointed as such, merely disgusted as usual.

  3. > It also argued that Clause 12 of the code does not require publications to “explain why a person’s former name or pre-transition story were genuinely relevant to a story”.

So we have precedent that the papers can just deadname trans people for no reason other than “we want to”?

    Fantastic…

EDIT: I find it interesting that every other time I post about trans-related stuff on here, i get one of those “A concerned reddit reached out” suicide watch posts.

Like… i get its some weird attempt to troll? But like, i just go “oh huh, someone has no life i guess” and move on lmao.

  4. So they investigated themselves and found they did nothing wrong. IPSO is not worth the paper it’s written on and only exists because the Tories didn’t want to be seen as censoring their mates’ papers.

  5. She criticised the government.

The Daily Mail retaliated by deadnaming her.

It’s a bit worrying when the government and the press work together to harass and intimidate their critics in an attempt to silence them. Especially when they’re using their victims’ marginalised status to power their attacks!

  6. I think the IPSO is just hopelessly weak and seemingly quite disinterested in standards.

Having read the article, they just give a random bit of biographical information about their pre-transition life which doesn’t seem to fit at all with the narrative of the story which is about a twitter argument.

It is not as though the person would be known to the public at large by either of their names.
