Wages have been stagnant in this country for longer than a good portion of working peoples entire adult lives.
Wonder if this might be why theres such little morale or desire to actually work anymore.
Don’t worry. The rich can stuff their pensions without limits now.
There are also special low tax investment zones, where you can’t find any concrete details about. This means they are probably designed for party mates to use.
How are the brackets still frozen until 2028 when we have had the highest inflation? Fiscal drag will stagnate things even more.
Anyone else at the point you have to actively not think about how shit everything is, how there are no prospects for working people, how we fucked up with Europe and if we ever rejoin it’ll be under worst conditions than we left, how the day to day feels epically pointless, everyone seems sadder, nuclear oblivion seems closer than ever, the climate is fucked, you can’t park the car without almost having a fistfight over parking with the neighbour, shops more poorly stocked than ever, prices going mental, just to protect their mental health? If I think about this stuff my heart hurts and there’s a distant but palpable background panic. I guess I should get off reddit and wedge my head deeper into the sand. No mechanisms for change and living conditions get worse and worse. Sometimes it feels like people get worse and worse but that’s the result of life getting ever harder and more pinched.
> UK on track for *another* ‘disastrous decade’ of income stagnation | Budget 2023
There fixed the headline.
I am confused. Is this or is this not what people voted for?
I remember a lot of people saying “who cares about the economy?”
I’ve just read Bernie sanders new book, USA’s working class wages have stagnated for 50 years and the middle class is being squeezed out of existence. If you have heart attack with no insurance you go bankrupt. I think the tories want us in the same boat over here. I don’t understand why these rich countries want poorer underclasses.
We had a disastrous decade between 2008-2018. That finished half a a decade ago, so we are already halfway through the second disastrous decade.
End stage capitalism. The bubble has burst. We’re all fucked until somebody can come up with a fairer system.
– The Last Labour Government™ put average (real terms) wages up 27% over the course of their term
– The Tories have dropped that figure by 6%
They missed the word ‘ another’ before ‘disastrous decade’!
Salaries have not increased since the 1990s in my industry.
is this like those yahoo news articles about snow in winter where they hid all comments over 11 months old for the 10th time and still have shocked reactions?
More need to look at emigration. Pretty much anywhere else is paying better.
I wonder if any part of my generation’s working life will be spent not in some sort of recession. Graduated into one, a few years too young to be able to afford a house or kids in the current climate, and now they reckon it will continue to be shit until I’m nearly 50. What’s the point. I guess at least we’re not at war. We’re at the point where that’s all we’ve got to be thankful for in this country.
I knew it would be The Guardian just from the title.
Add it to the pile, would you?

What was the last decade then?

Well, who does?
I live in the South East and according to the [governments own stats](https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8456/) real wages have fallen 9% since 2008. If we have a repeat of that it’s going to be a fucking mess.
