Mental health, and especially atruggling with mental health is something that offends a lot of people. Many people see mental illness as laziness and suicide as cowardice. Why that is, honestly I don’t know, but I feel like a lot of it has to do with our toxic work culture.
TikTok
I don‘t know why but for me it always seemed
like that young women tend to care alot more about their „social apearance“ and are ofte stressed out about how others percieve them compared to young men. This has only increased with social media.
while modern women have a lot of pressure to perform – which could lead to higher suicide rates, as another commenter pointed out – Men still commit several times more suicedes than women. And this is notably scaling with age.
even worse, looking at the data, men 25-35 have about the same increase, but have 3 times the higher rate. So somebody looked at this and said, were just gonna talk about the women.
They could have talked about that compared to the years prior, almost every suicide rate went down!
Fucking hell, this shit is annoying.
With this theme, you can’t just make it working for all model. This have to be address independently for every individual person.
social media – Im sorry to say this but our work culter isnt the problem. i can count 100 countrys were work culter is more shit then in the switzerland for woman.
Social Media makes people lazy and well also takes your endurance to work for you and your family.
I was thinking about it yesterday.. My boyfriend’s works in the railway and you cannot imagine the continuous cases of people taking their own lives.. it’s so sad…
Can we first deal with the fact that men kill themselves in much greater number than women? maybe that work would have direct and usable results to also deal with why young women, while at a much lower rate, are also killing themselves.
“Fachleute rätseln”
Hmmm, what happened in 2020 to the group that most requires a social circle to be happy.
Hmmm, truly a mystery. Who could know?
What is it saying ? any english or french translation ?
From the three people that I know personally who have taken their own life, all were men. From the 5 people who took their life here in my village the last year, all of them were men. So, I think this shows that men have a bigger stigma around mental health, less support and generally a harder way in the psychological struggles. Don’t get me wrong, being suicidal is hard for everyone. But women are usually motivated to speak about their feelings and struggles.
Talking openly about it could help IMO. But with the available therapeutic help, the stigmata and the hardships of being mentally ill in Switzerland, we still have a long way ahead.
Probably a big chunk of loneliness and unhealthy expectations set by TikTok and other ‘social’ media.
All people that got murdered (42) and every person that died from drugs (142) plus all people that died in road related accidents (200)
PLUS all females that commited suicide (235)
Is about the number of male suicide
(590)
I’ve read the article and it says that suicide from teen girls have risen to 17 cases in 2020 while teen boys suicides haven’t, there are still about 60 cases
Honest question, why do you use this picture when wanting to talk about suicide? Not adressing the group that makes the vast majority of suicide.
To a large degree to fatherlessness/a very unstable family that underperformed in raising the child
Ein echt erdrückender und trauriger Trend. Hab meine Spekulationen darüber, woran das liegen könnte, aber behalte das für mich
I’m the author of the post, I just wanna say thank u for all your answers! This post was for talking about the taboo of the suicide in switzerland (for men and women), the fact that the first photo talk about woman was just an example! (just to clarify 🙂
It’s disgusting how people use trends like this for their political agendas, which they held before those stats were released coincidentally rather than recognizing it as a problem that needs a specific solution
We’re not pussies who can’t handle a little bit of pressure at work. When I was young, there was no suicide, no depression. Men acted like men.
/s obviously
TW! Be aware: The suicide rates are rising among female youngsters only doesn’t mean, that they’re higher than young mens rates.
Still, suicide is a mostly male phenomenon and young men are at a far higher risk to die of suicide than young women.
It is a concerning problem, that female suicide rates are rising, and it’s also a concerning problem that young men and boys are threatened by mental health problems at such an alarming rate.
Let’s not make this male vs female – if the rise in female mental health problems would lead to finally having effective help for young peoples mental health problems, we all would feel relieve.
Thank you for your post. I’m looking to show it to my students. They chose to work on issues related to « life and death ».
I was preparing a mémoire about assisted suicide before I started teaching. So I explained to them how assisted suicide works, is related but different from euthanasia, its weird history… I think they are already regretting their choice.
lol thats not a taboo
a taboo is to be mentally ill as a man in switzerland.
One also depressing fact I learn recently: My brother has get very anxious in specific situations, and we have been trying to find a therapist. Well no luck. All of them are fully booked and also funfact, apparently the majority of therapists here are specialized in partner/marriage counseling.
Regardless of everyone trying to turn this into a male versus female discussion I think the main problem is is that we are the most connected generation but we’re not connected in real terms. We don’t meet our friends as much. Most connections are online and superficial. Everyone is too busy with work and whatnot and instead of having real meaningful connections we settle for surface level and online personas.
INFO:
The suicide rate has increased compared to when? To 2019 or 1995? That is quite an important data point that is missing (or that I have missed).
That’s because it’s customary to not talk about grave realities so that the pride of the family doesn’t get hurt.
It goes so far that some families broke apart due to this conditioning.
Same goes for Disemployment, Depression, Homelessness and other Differences in general. It’s a fabricated bubble that the swiss refuse to pop.
To clarify: This bubble is most persistent in familial situations.
Was gibt’s da zu raetseln?
Social mdia, especially Instagram. Like in every other country with enough social media penetration.
To discuss Suicide we need to open a lot of negative problems in our society. Is a complex, shameful and hurtful subject to discuss.
My 2 cents is that swiss society is extremely exigent of you, specially males. A swiss citizen have more responsibilities to attend and if you fail, the consequences may be huge. It was been like that in ages (and ironically is a part why this country is what it is today), but now, due to our «new» culture (informatization, social media, etc.) everything is more quick, more dramatic, were your fails are even more amplified.
Switzerland is a fantastic country to live in which take a lot of things guaranteed, but it’s very competitive. If you are not up to, or you have a big fall, it can be mentally harsh to live in. Specially in urban areas.
Some say that is because we have a weak generations… It can be, I’m not sure. But we can’t ignore the fact that Switzerland is extremely competitive. If you can thrive you are good and happy. But if is too much or you are out of luck, is very harsh.
Could it be the result of this woke culture and social media???
2020 Age 0-14 female: 6 suicides, the most for this data range till 1990. The year before 2019 only 2 suicides. The next age group is 15-44.
Overall 2020 female suicides: 276 excactly the same as 2019.
Overall 2020 male suicides: 696, 2019 were 742.
I was surprised to see, that with age the suicide increases – and not decreases. So the older we get, the higher the risks are for suicide. But i guess when somebody young dies we talk about it more.
I do not know if i think this because of my own experiences but is it possible that theres a connection between rising female suicide cases and rising cases of rape and sexual assault?
Because it’s a problem which primarily affects men, if it was women it would be 1st priority world wide.
That headline is just the usual misandrist sexism that’s so normalised these days. Around 80% of the suicides kill boys and men, but that’s nothing really worth talking about.
My best friend did it because a guy broke up with her. She always had everything she wanted, so I guess she never built resistance to rejection.
I know A LOT of people who did, but not in Switzerland
Bcs the route cause will not taste the ones running the show.
Seriously, who still enjoy living in 2k23?
While I don’t understand suicide (way too spiteful for this), I find even more alien people who actually act like they’re happy. Dunno if it’s an act or for real.
I’d say the list of reasons would be too long for a simple reddit posts.
My main point would probably be lack of therapists, our Bund moving really slowly when it comes to that and the new regulations brought a lot of issues, lack of space for psychologist students (at the UZH, the largest Uni in switzerland, there are 250 spots available), the stigma surrounding it, friend groups that are not aware of mental illnesses or even completely ignorant towards it, personal shame to go to therapy etc. etc.
Switzerland is so rigide, and shape for a specific type of mentality. I lost so many friends between the age of 15 and 25… Parents of friends as well. The pressure in this country to fit or be like the norm is insane.
Men becomin to weak for it
Wouldn‘t be suprised if this is due to tiktok and other social media platforms
For me (18, male), mental health wasn’t really something we talked about. As a kid, my parents always told me that I needed to be a man and not talk about my feelings or what was hurting me. I took that “advice” and never talked about things with my parents or friends. My life took a hard turn when I started being bullied in school. I was always a quiet kid and never wanted to get into fights with anybody. It was around 3rd grade when I told my teacher about the bullying after a while. He was really cool and told my parents and theirs, and he handled the situation well. However, I always felt like I shouldn’t have talked to them, I should have handled it myself. I told myself that I’m not a man and I’m worthless and stuff. Later on, I would realize I was depressed, but at that time, it sounded so true. The bullying got worse in 7th grade, where I got set on fire, beaten, and other stuff. I won’t go into details right now. However, I didn’t tell anybody because I wanted to be the man that could handle this myself. I hit them back, and it ended in a fistfight. I broke his nose, and he hit me in the stomach. I puked for the next 2 days, but otherwise, I was fine. It didn’t stop the bullying, but it became worse. I started thinking about shooting him in school and then myself. My thoughts became worse and worse, but as a “man,” I couldn’t talk about this with anybody. I then tried to kill myself, and when my parents found out, they were pissed. I told them everything, and I finally broke down. I ended up in a clinic, and the people there were cool, and my time there was good. I wasn’t the quiet kid anymore though I punched a lot of people when they came at me wrong. However, I learned that I had to talk about it or else I would break from the inside out. I also realized how toxic my “friends” were. They were hardcore Nazis and hated gays, Jews, Yugos, etc. The story has a happy ending though.
After my time in the clinic, I never went back to school. By the time I came out, it was time for my “Lehr,” which I’m still doing. I’m class best, and even though I fear school, I manage to teach myself everything at home.
So what you can learn from my story is that a “man” can talk about his feelings and his pain. You don’t have to hide everything. I now even believe that a strong man is able to talk about his feelings, and that it is a part of life that is necessary to grow up.
I hope somebody reading this can take a lesson from me.
It’s 33 in 2020 compared to 25 in 2019 according to the BFS (young women that is). That is total bs for ANY statistic. We have about 8’000’000 people in Switzerland, so this could just be randomness at play. It’s a very stigmatized topic.
