Vote to be held on eradicating all Uist estate’s deer

  1. It never ceases to amaze me just how badly wildlife balance and conservation is sometimes handled in Britain, it seems like the ‘pendulum’ effect yet again.

Uist does not even have a particularly high Deer density. 93,000 acres is approx 376 sq km which in turn comes to approx. 3 deer per square km, which is nothing unusual and certainly well within the carry capacity. Reading between the lines I would say the actual issue is *’complaints about grazing on croft land’*, ie, competing with the sheep for food and most importantly winter pasture.

Anyway, good luck culling 1,200 deer, easier said than done. You would expect they might get about a third into that cull before the deer become so skittish they will be running at the site of the argo or stalker at the bottom of the hill.
