Neasa Hourigan, the Green Party TD who wanted to keep ban on evictions, raised concerns about proposals for more than 5,000 new homes in her constituency

  1. >over concerns about apartment heights, the impact developments might have on natural sunlight and maintenance of architectural heritage on turn-of-century buildings.

    >Ms Hourigan took issue with a development which she said could lead to “illegal footpath parking”.

    >She also complained about a 240-apartment development due to concerns about the impact of the building on pedestrians, the size of playgrounds in the complex and low number of electric vehicle charging points.

    >And she made ‘observations’ about student accommodation and co-living spaces in her local community while serving as a government TD.

Sounds mostly reasonable. Would it not be better to ask why developers insist on putting forward plans with significant flaws?

    In addition:

    >In a lengthy response to the Irish Independent, Ms Hourigan said she made “observations not objections on all those applications”.

  2. Neasa Hourigan acting like a hypocrite?

The same Neasa Hourigan who spent MONTHS ranting about the Mother and Baby homes and how it was such a disgrace that the government was planning to seal the records. Only for her to vote with the government on the day.

    I’m shocked. SHOCKED!
    Well… not that shocked.

  3. How on now a second, most of the complaints listed seem pretty valid to me. She is not objecting to housing but the nature of the specific plans. Which is EXACTLY what should be done, we need houses yes but not poorly planned ones that just lead to more problems down the line.

Short term thinking and planning have already caused enough issues

  4. A couple of comments here about people who haven’t read the article. Figured I’d give it a go rather than deduct the usual story from the headline. The “observations” are even more stupid and reprehensible than I had imagined having not read it. So I do encourage everyone to read the article in its entirety and realise why you should never vote for these people if you ever want yourself or your kids to be able to find nice housing.

  5. This country, and this sub in particular, has somehow adopted the incredibly flawed idea that it is never acceptable to object to any housing development. Any legitimate concerns are ignored and the fact that someone has the gall to raise concerns is taken as evidence that they have no interest in fixing the housing crisis.

  6. You’re allowed to have concerns..like who wouldn’t expect our government to fuck up building quality houses just to save money.

  7. The FFG attack plan is very clear: the housing emergency is due to objections to applications. Dig up past political affiliations of public figures promoting analyses they don’t like. Aggressive media interventions. Push the very recent uptick in building and first time buyers.

Has there been a new political campaign consultant appointed?

  8. I’m not entirely sure the impact a “concern” has to the planning process but I think all her issues with the developments relate to poor or low effort planning by the developers.

” Dublin City Council and An Bord Pleanála records show the Dublin Central TD has complained about proposals for thousands of potential new homes over concerns about apartment heights, the impact developments might have on natural sunlight and maintenance of architectural heritage on turn-of-century buildings. ”

I think overall shes right to raise the conerns and town planners and developers need to put more effort into building proper communities.

The article is cheap, low effort and really an example of the journalists we produce in Ireland. The Journo really shouldve gone to the developers and found out why these concerns aren’t planned for given they seem like common sense. Bravo Philip.

  9. more nonsense from power. If our goal is to build houses, it should be expected that the houses and surrounds are designed well.
Never let the cowboys win with their mica in construction materials, the lamp post in the cycling lane and the back to front estate.

  10. Neasa is my Local TD and with the greatest respect to her it appears she is out if her depth and lacks sufficient experience as a politician.

First elected in 2019 to the council and the very next year as a TD and this lack of political experience becomes evident at almost every juncture.

We need better politicians regardless of party or persuasion and in this instance the past performance isn’t demonstrating any skillet that has resulted in a positive outcome or input on any front.

In any other industry this level of rapid promotion wouldn’t exist.

  11. Such a bullshit post by OP. One would have to wonder why you would bother when at least one person will read the article ad call you out on how you present it

  12. A local TD and a councillor in my town objected to a new house development across the road from the local GAA pitch because they said the land should be used instead for a new carpark for the GAA club

  13. Housing was stopped where I live as well. It’s as if they are purposely creating these problems for us. Most of us,who are renting, will have no where to go if we get evicted. If they don’t start building houses, the homeless crisis is going to be beyond repair. There has to be a solution that will suite landlords & tenants.

  14. She has been very clear in just wanting to ensure she keeps her seat and role as a TD. Blows whatever way the populist wind is blowing.
