Once we finished making fun of the UK, we should also be worried that almost half of the honeys tested turned out to be fiddled with. That’s still an enormous number.
Damn didn’t know there was counterfeit honey.
How dare bloody unelected EU bureaucracts tell us to not put sugar in our honey and not to put raw sewage into rivers!!? /s
*Investigators tested 320 samples and found 147 (46%) were suspicious, where “at least one marker of extraneous sugar sources was detected”.*
Fuck’s sake! Olaf better start slapping fines like there’s no tomorrow.
United Kingdom of scams.
The EU should do tests on all the UK imported food, vegetables, fruits, drinks etc and if they find that there are problems the EU should start banning all said imports from the UK.
Also it would be wise to start checks on non food imports as well because of this precedence.
The adulterated honey very likely originated in the Chinese honey imports rather than being “done” in the UK, as this article mentions. More should be done by the UK to ensure honey imported from China is actually honey and it’s shameful that this is another thing the government are willing to turn a blind eye on to help increase profits by deluding consumers.
If you live in the EU always look at the label, if it says “mixed EU and non-EU honey”. “Non-EU honey” almost always means honey from China as that’s the cheapest, and that means it’s likely mixed with sugar/syrup. If you want real honey look for only EU honey and preferably with a single country of origin stated on the label.
Unfortunately quite hard to find. Once checked 10 honeys in a supermarket and none was without non-EU honey.
makes me glad my dad keeps bees
One can taste it. Legit honey has a taste and smell of bee wax, complex flower aroma and the aftertaste is not as acidic as the ones with sugar mixed in. 🐝🐝🐝. That acidic aftertaste of refined sugar or glucose is different from real honey.
Also the price is an indication. 1kg or real honey is around 10€ at the moment 2023.
