The Research Center for Nuclear Energy in Mol (SCK) has taken an important step forward against the proliferation of nuclear fuel for nuclear weapons. For the first time, SCK’s research reactor has run on lower-enriched uranium. Lower enriched uranium is safer than highly enriched uranium because it is more difficult to make nuclear weapons from it. But it is actually not suitable for the reactor. It needs highly enriched uranium to be able to make substances that are used worldwide against cancer. Nevertheless, SCK has now succeeded in doing this with lower enriched uranium: a world first.

  1. So, nothing to do with nuclear power plants and their safety, but only important for specialised reseach reactors and the possibility to turn their fuel into an atomic weapon.

The cynic in me thinks this is mainly just a cost-benefit, since you no longer have to enrich as high as before.

  2. Frankly, I’m much more worried for a terrorist attack with a dirty bomb than actual nuclear weapons.

Anyways, I’m glad that nuclear research is still possible in Belgium in spite of political opposition.

  3. That reporter was so childish against that US researcher: ” so it is a Belgian achievement eh”

please as if scientists working on this don’t collab.
