Malta becomes first European country to legalise recreational cannabis

  2. This is not really a legalization, this is more akin to decriminalization. Germany looks like it will be the first to properly legalize it.

  3. Oh, and Georgia did something similar already a while ago, so if it this does count as a legalization, then Malta is anyway not first.

  4. Sadly Sweden is at least one election cycle away from even considering this (2026). Hopefully Malta and Germany will set the trend for the rest of Europe. But I do think it’s possible more debate on the issue will start in the middle of the upcoming cycle and likely a few parties will use it as a wedge in the 26 election. I think it’s nearly impossible any party makes this a campaign issue before the fall election.

  5. Only being sold to registered members of a club is a huge mistake. Legalization should remove all profitable reasons for the black market to exist and Malta’s attempt won’t accomplish this.
