EXCLUSIVE: 18 female guards at a single jail fired for having illicit affairs with inmates

  1. Since 2019, some 31 female officers in England and Wales have been dismissed for inappropriate relationships, Ministry of Justice stats show. They include one officer who had an inmate’s baby.

  2. The Chair blaming this on job interviews being conducted via Zoom certainly wasn’t a take I was expecting when I opened the article.

  3. Absolutely bizarre that so many are willing to risk, ironically, a prison sentence for it. And these are just the ones that get caught..

  4. There’s an entire subset of women who weirdly idolise criminals and think that they can ‘save them’. Delusional and very concerning they got to be prison guards.

  5. As a CO for 28 years in the Canadian federal correctional service and a union representative (retired) management has culpability too. Ongoing training on how inmates manipulate staff and providing an opportunity to self-report before things go too far.

Also working in prison can disrupt your outside social support and family relationships. Officers spend more time with the inmates than with those outside the prison. Inmates spend time observing officer behaviour and can zero in on those that look vulnerable. It is a game for most and I have seen inmates that were proud of how many officers they could turn.

A good system of checks and balances is important too, on our units we always had officers paired up on the floor. You stayed with your partner while an officer oversaw the whole unit. We also would report things we saw that were off in other officers when it came to inmate interactions. These reports went to our Security Intelligence officer who collects the information and investigates it. We also policed ourselves if we say someone struggling and going bad. You made sure they got help for the issues that were making them vulnerable through the Employee Assistance program, run by staff.

Of course some people come into the system that are totally wrong for the environment and that is many times due to bad recruitment and policy. There are also those that are recruited by gangs to get hired and provide an avenue for contraband into the prison.

  6. Why do we not have male guards for male prisons and female guards for female prisons? We segregated the prisoners for a reason, the guards should have the same segregation. And yes, I’m aware that gay guards and prisoners exist regardless, but since the majority of the population are heterosexual, segregating the majority seems an appropriate solution for the most part.

  7. So, from “31 female officers in England and Wales have been dismissed for inappropriate relationships” 18 were from one “privately run jail” which does recruitment via zoom call.

Why the hell there are privately run jails in the first place?

  8. Not a single prisoner complained about being sexually assaulted or raped. Would have thought that with their alleged abuser facing charges they would have jumped in if they had any complaints.

All the claims of rape of armed robbers and violent drug dealers here seem a bit hysterical.

  9. They need to be punished like the inmates they were supposed to guard. It’s called dereliction of duty. ‘firing’ is not sufficient.

  10. There’s many a reason why, historically, prisons have only had male guards. This farce is one of them.

  11. Christ alive these comments

    Women can be abusers too

Abuse of power and role is a huge issue

The victims of abuse not complaining does not mean abuse didn’t happen

Some of you are really scary people

  12. Gross misconduct, may bias professional conduct of duties. Prisonguard in US, assisted the escape of her lover, later recaptured.
