Fintan O’Toole: How journalists were complicit in one of the great con jobs of modern times [the Iraq war]

  1. Behind the paywall. So not sure of the details but It is amazing that so many of the biggest pushers for the Iraq war in the media are all still in positions of media influence.

A load of themout recently in the 20th anniversary with articles about how it was wrong, but it was also right. So fucking disgusting

  2. That’s a very, very good piece. One of the few pieces I’ve read that acknowledges how much misinformation was floating about as well. There seems to be a current vogue for saying people knew there were no WMDs rather than analysing the difference between reckless belief and justified belief, no analysis of intelligence services, etc.

  3. Iraq is an example I always use when I see the lovely, well adjusted people of Reddit try and blame ordinary Russians for the current war. Public support for the war in Iraq was massive in America and Britain and based on literally nothing. This was in countries with free presses and where you’ll not be locked up or pushed out a window for wrongthink. Iraq was a fucking travesty that never should have happened
