I found this cute little linocut from 1923 at a thrift store. Someone on Reddit pointed out that I could be of the city of Zug in your beautiful country (“zug essen zusammen”). Do you recognize this place? Any information is welcome!

  1. hm hard to define Zug means Train so it can be that he is a swissgerman Artist but take the train towards another city the church has a italian style not swiss style. As example Domodossola looks a bit like that. But i have no match so far.

  2. I don’t think the bottom right says “Zug essen zusammen” (I’m guessing that’s what someone has guessed it says?) – I’m not a handwriting expert, but it looks more like e.g. Zugermann Jürgen (i.e. artist’s name).

ETA: I’d suggest the place name is on the bottom left – no idea what that might say.

  3. I believe the word on the left is “Haandtryk” meaning handprinted, which might mean that the artist is Danish.

  4. THE MYSTERY HAS BEEN SOLVED THABBK YOU REDDIT!
Left text: “haandtryk 1923 25/30” which means handprinted in danish.

    Artist: Ingemann Hans Jørgensen (1895-1958)

Technique: woodcut on thin oriental paper

    The subject:
Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. Google street view, https://maps.app.goo.gl/d78U8yor274wpGTbA?g_st=ic

    Context:
Bought it at a thrift store called Vallue Village in Ottawa, Canada. It was in a
sold together with another artwork for $6. The other artwork is a color pencil of a neighborhood in Copenhague. Which makes me think that it’s very likely that they were given to the thrift store together and this artist in indeed danish. Link to the other artwork: https://imgur.com/a/drU98JV

EDIT: Edited with the most up-to-date info. Thank you everyone for your help!!!

  5. Pretty sure that is the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, seen from about here: [https://www.google.com/maps/@55.6822346,12.5767731,3a,75y,229.29h,75.03t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1skadPnXldq9qTh6_lpYygRQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192](https://www.google.com/maps/@55.6822346,12.5767731,3a,75y,229.29h,75.03t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1skadPnXldq9qTh6_lpYygRQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) (there’s a stupid tree in the way, and the perspective is a bit off). The building on the left is the Round Tower.

  6. On a first glimpse I (living in Zug) thought it could actually be Zug, ‘Untere Altstadt’ looking in the direction of ‘Liebfrauenkapelle’ because it also has a square-ish tower.

But the tower looks different, there’s no row of houses in front of it looking from this direction, and it’s probably also smaller.

So I’m sure it’s not Zug. Upon closer inspection it also doesn’t generally look like Switzerland. I’d go with the Danish version that has been mentioned on this thread.
