Gary Lineker’s BBC suspension like something from ‘Putin’s Russia’, says Labour – UK politics live | Politics | The Guardian

  1. Just love the implications of the headline

    Lineker starts by saying the government’s language is similar to the Nazis

    Lineker gets taken off air

    Labour then says the governments behaviour in taking Lineker off air is reminiscent of Putin’s Russia

    Wonder what they’ve got lined up for an encore?

  2. As [Owen Jones](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/14/gary-lineker-bbc-rightwing-national-debate) rightly points out, [Labour under Blair and Campbell interfered very directly in the running of the BBC](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2004/aug/31/bbc.hutton) when they were in power because they didn’t like the BBC’s Iraq war coverage, so the crocodile tears from Labour today don’t wash. Also how about they stop the tiresome ‘everyone I don’t like is Hitler / Putin’ nonsense, it just puts most people off.

    >”Much in Mr Dyke’s account still has the power to shock, not least the extent to which No 10 tried to intimidate the state broadcaster into altering the balance of its reporting. His disclosure of a personal letter from the prime minister criticising the BBC’s Iraq coverage – a move which amounts to direct political interference in the BBC’s prized independence – is a charge that Tony Blair needs to answer.”

  3. So we’ve had comparisons to:

    * 1930s Germany
    * Putin’s Russia

    I’m assuming the next logical comparison will be:

    * It’s literally North Korea

  4. “It’s like Putin’s Russia!!!”

    No, dipstick.. it’s what happens when your breach your contract multiple times over after multiple warnings. He should be sacked.

  5. People need to stop flippantly throwing around terms like “Nazi Germany” for things because it’s just disrespectful, also like Russia is it? Fuck off with that, russian people are being kidnapped and beaten to death for speaking against their government.

    It’s just nothing but disrespect from both sides, it’s pathetic and its trivialising of real horrors that have gone on in this world.
