The Cayman Islands has no extradition treaty with the UK
and
You can’t really extradite money.
£1bn to give Junior Doctors pay rise we deserve and deliver a service without haemorrhaging staff to Australia/ New Zealand.
Thats why ” theres no money ”
Corruption.
I wonder how many billions are resting in the accounts of Tory donors.
It’s not lost, have a look at the pockets of Tory donators.
What with the £30bn Liz Truss lost, this must be one of the most costly terms we’ve ever had.
Caught my ex-boss making fraudulent claims. By my estimation he lined his pockets with the equivalent of an entire junior doc’s annual salary, bought new furniture and took his family on holidays. I reported it to HMRC, and 15 months later still nothing. I have all the evidence ready including an audio confession, if they ask for it.
It’s a lost ……its sitting in the tories mates bank accounts
If you were self employed at this time, it was basically a free 12 grand. As long as you didn’t go for that third payment, you’ll never, ever have to pay it back.
Well, it’s obviously not important, what’s important is that we crack down on the benefit cheats!!!!!!!!!!!!
After all, they cost about 1% of that figure, so that’s certainly the area to focus on…
And yet benefits fraud is top news and a holy quest.
Some of that £21 Billion would certainly speed up processing asylum seeker claims, not that this Tory Gov’t has any intention or interest in doing more than just moaning about the problem in an attempt to manipulate voters..
I assume the Bounce Back Loans are thrown in with this figure also.
I literally (indirectly*) dealt with BBL applications and the amount of fraudulent applications that I came across were shocking.
*Yes, I know you applied yourself but it’s a little more complicated than that.
Meanwhile they put an extra £280m into chasing down disabled people who are claiming 2p more from the DWP than they are strictly entitled to.
Genuinely, it feels a bit tin foil, but I think there is a concerted effort to not look too closely at what happened with public funding over covid. Just barely scratching the surface shows absolutely staggering levels of fraud and general shit-housery, we were robbed to the tune of tens of billions with full approval from the government, often with members of the government deeply involved themselves. It goes so hard against the “we did the best anyone could be expected to do” narrative I think the general consensus is just don’t touch it with a 10ft barge pole while anyone involved is still in politics.
I’ve never been less surprised to be honest.
I’m hardly swimming in self-employed friends, but I know two self-employed business owners who applied for help from the Covid scheme only to be told they’d already applied and the money had been paid out.
My other half was an agency worker when Covid hit, and he was laid off (NOT furloughed, laid off). Eight weeks later a large sum of money appeared in his bank account from the agency he’d been working for, accompanied by a payslip showing that he’d been working 240 hour weeks at £1 an hour. We never managed to get them to answer the phone to get an explanation, and they’ve apparently just vanished off the face of the planet. The company the agency was recruiting for told him that as far as they were concerned, he’d never been laid off just furloughed – his position was still required, but they had to make such massive changes to support social distancing they couldn’t have temps in the building while the changes were made.
The only thing we can think of is that the agency thought they were going to get away with telling everyone they’d been laid off, then pocketing the furlough money. They probably tripped up with this company because they pride themselves on being an ethical employer, and asked for evidence the furlough payments had been made. I imagine they pocketed a lot of money from employees of smaller companies though, then left the country.
Wasn’t this exact story posted about a week ago?
Let’s give out billions of pounds and not bother do perform any authenticity checks. what could possibly go wrong?
But hey let’s focus on the minute amount of benefit fraud instead. That’ll teach those poors!
Between this and the cost of living being used to rob us why do we never riot like the french?
Makes me feel stupid for trying to do the right thing and not taking advantage of every scheme going, just because we didn’t need to.
Should have known that even in a global pandemic it would be every man out for himself and this incompetent government wouldn’t be policing it anyway.
Sure let’s s ale down the tread trying to reclaim this
How about we drop an extra billion into that team and actually get the money back?
Crazy idea I know but it might just pay for itself and then some
It wasn’t lost, it went where it was supposed to go and making it appear lost is part of the process. Everyone acting like this is something new or recent, this has been going on since the invention of Government.
It wasn’t lost, it was distributed to Tory donors who then hire these political crooks for fancy high paid speeches and consultancy jobs
£7 billion in covid schemes? That leaves £14 billion in non covid schemes 🤔
Nooo but we can’t give any benefits out haha imagine spending a few quid so the vulnerable in society don’t starve and freeze, imagine all the tax cuts we could give our wealthy donors instead and all the fraud we could not investigate
Same in alot of countries. One guy in Berlin defrauded the German government out of around 2 million.
The rich fleeced the country during the pandemic. It’s 2008 all over again.
Most self employed guys on site that I know took the SE grants and worked through the entire thing too. Thing my one friend took like 3-4 6k grants while still making 50-60k a year
That whole app they made was fraud and that cost double.
Why won’t it be recovered?! It’s our money, surely if we can execute a 10 day funeral without a leaf out of line for the queen we can find the likes of Michelle mone et al. Follow the email chains and then find the people. The truth is they don’t want to chase it and that’s what gives people fuel to strike, hence what we are seeing in France.
The UK has fallen out of the top 10% of the world’s least corrupt countries, and is heading solidly for mid-table. But no-one will do anything, because Strictly is on, then it’s time for some ultra-processed food, then Bake-Off, following by a Mr Kiplings pie, with added cancer.
It’s okay because when there was a labour government you see they borrowed extensively on the nations credit card and bankrupted the nation we know because they left a note, and there’s no magic money tree ahem… and and erm.. it’s different when we throw .. I mean give.. away billions in contracts to our sponsors .. ahem I mean ppe providers and businesses that we’rent real, anyone remember the ferry company that didn’t own any ferries and copy/pasted its website from a take-away! Anyway where was I yes it is different when we do it! /s
I’d be happy if I knew my tax went towards infrastructure, emergency services, the nhs, helping the elderly/ disabled and free school meals for all. Not in some chancers arse pocket.
‘Lost’. It’s not lost, you just tax it back. Oh you mean not lost? You mean deliberately given to the rich as a transfer of wealth? Like always?
If the transfer of wealth is always the aim, now, then, ten years ago, ten years into the future, then any disruption, crisis like covid acts as the perfect cover for ‘mistakes’ and ‘accidents’ and ‘fraud’. The propaganda aim to convince people the government is never in control and is always just trying to manage amd that this behaviour is just too clever for them.
Sorry if that sounds stupid but I don’t buy it.
I can already hear the overheating brains of the over 50s grappling with this logic.
“Yeh but it wud hav been wors’ unda labour tho”
This is our future.
And we regularly call out other countries that are corrupt.
Makes me sick.
As if I needed to be convinced further that the Tories fiddled whilst everything else around us burned.
Just to put this into context, this is more money than was lost to fraud during the post Iraq War reconstruction ($17 billion).
Not because they don’t know where it is, because they know *exactly* where it is.
… But there’s no money to give teachers a proper payrise
I bet this will also somehow be the fault of “the last Labour government”.
And the government are now pushing us all to ‘tighten our budgets’ and refusing to pay people what they’re worth (am a doctor so junior doctor pay restoration is my prerogative) all in order to fix the inflation they’re the cause of.
Reported a local restaurant who used my dad’s details to claim furlough money… Dude is still open.
‘lost in fraud’ aka deliberately stolen by those in charge of the government.
Disgusting banana republic.
Basically it was one of the biggest transfers of wealth in recent times, and all that money went to the people that needed it the least.
Straight into the pockets of corrupt Tories and their friends.
And we as the British public have sat back and let them. And we still are.
We are to blame.
But if it was someone on benefits, they’d move heaven and earth to get it back. Fuck the tories.
I’m a cryptocurrency enthusiast so I obviously have faith in the technology, but even if we decide to stick with paying bankers billions every year in bonuses with public money, the very least we can do is get government coffers onto blockchain and public ledger so we can see how they’re spending our collective wealth? Is it so hard to ask for a bit of transparency when they demand that of us?
Yet if ya owed the hmrc or dwp a tenner they’d be round faster then the Mafia
