Why does so much of the Global South support Russia, not Ukraine?

  1. Geopolitics. Its not complicated. USA has invaded or couped most of the nations in the global South. The USA was and is the Soviets/Russia for its own victims especially Latin Americans who they have treated as client states for 180 years. Why would they supoort the US or US allies? Are they stupid? No.

Same reason most people in Baltics have a seizure if you mention USA invasions and occupations in Middle East which are as bad or worse than Ukraine. They dont count. Its not the same. I dont know those people. Terrorists! Freedom! Western culture!

Morally bankrupt hypocrisy is what geopolitics produces, and liars afraid to speak honestly. You support the thug who gives you weapons and “protects” you with/from their benevolent imperialism. The Global South will continue to be hypocrites on Ukraine just as we are hypocrites on USA and imperialism. Love it, hate it, its reality.

  2. Global South have weaker democratic systems, lower education and quality of life, therefore are easier to manipulate. russia is famous for spending tremendous amounts of money on furthering their propaganda.
Also regimes will protect regimes. This is a war between the free world and those who want to overtake it.

  3. Old emotional attachments from cold war era. A lot of those countries were colonized by western powers and the Soviets in a lot of cases supplied them with weapons in their wars of independence.

  4. Because they think that Ukraine=USA.

Also in this pic these people support the authoritarian Assad who’s backed by Russia.

  5. Mainly because of lack of development and USSR brainwashing (lets be friends, West did a lot of shit to you, with colonizing, and we will help you out) policy. Russia was just “at the right moment”, when colonies of western powers began to shatter. Russia basically used colonialism to blame everything on the west and make new “friends”

“Ironically, russia was also colonizing countries (Not by sea, but by land tho)

Lets also not forget that USSR has been spreading their shitty ideology to every country possible. Weakest countries (politically) were the most vulnerable.

  6. They don’t support Russia. They are neutral.

There are maybe 5-6 countries in the world that actually support Russia, compared to dozens who support Ukraine.

  7. Global South was victim of US imperialism. Exploitaition, murder, slavery, robbery, so obviously a lot of them gonna hate US and its allies, and will align themselves with those who fight against them, even if that opposition is other side of a same coin.

  8. If you want answer that’s not “they’re brainwashed”, this is it:

Premise of my explanation is that southern countries are predominantly barely industrialized and their economies revolve around selling raw materials to 1st world countries and buying produced goods in exchange. Obviously, those countries want to also industrialize and grow their economies, but they lack capital to build an industry, and west has no incentive to invest in those countries as they can already produce their own goods, and pouring substantial amount of money into third world countries to only make their own industry compete against them is just not worth it, specially when western industries rely on third world countries providing raw materials.

BRICS on the other hand, has agenda to overthrow US dollar as a reserve currency, or create a second reserve currency, possibly chinese yen for their own side, but in order to do that, you need substantial amount of developed countries to agree to use that currency and for it to be stable. This means, that in order to create such currency, BRICS needs to invest in these third world countries to create new markets, and then later use influence gained by those investments to get them to use chinese yen as reserve currency. What also helps is the fact that because US dollar is main currency used in trade, China’s trade provides them with more dollars than they can bring into their own economy (due to inflation), so they have lot’s of dollars to invest into other economies.

Third world countries know this and most of them keep neutral stance to keep their options open, in case this whole plan fails. Some chose to support them, it really depends on how much they believe in BRICS to succeed in their plan. It’s not that these countries support this war, or even support Russia, it’s just that they don’t want to go against them either, to keep relations with BRICS positive and keep investments coming in.

  9. In the Cold War era, when Lithuania and Ukraine were both occupied and became part of the Second World, the Third World evolved as a third force trying to bridge the gap between the First World and the Second World. Most of the former European colonies joined the Third World as part of the Nonaligned Movement, which retained ties with both blocs.

In the Nineties, the United States focused on trying to bring the newly independent former Soviet states, Russia included, under its geopolitical influence, but neglected ties with those countries which were part of the Nonaligned Movement. A revanchist Russia and a growing China then saw the opportunity to sway people not so much toward themselves, but away from the West. It also matters that, for these countries, Ukraine was considered close to Russia, because of the influence of the earlier Cold War paradigm. It does also matter that the relationship between Ukraine and Russia soured only in 2014, as Ukraine moved toward the West, because eight years is too short a time for countries in the former Nonaligned Movement to see Ukraine as “Western”, and might be inclined to think of the conflict as a local fratricidal war.

But they are slowly being brought to the facts of the matter: that a war between Russia and Ukraine imperils the global food supply and raises prices, that Russia clearly started this war, and that China can positively influence Russia’s next steps. The President of Kenya, for example, has advocated for an end to the war and for China to “do more” than it has been doing. Ukraine has been working the phones, the emails, and the meetings with the former Nonaligned countries. Indonesia and Brazil came around to actively support Ukraine in the latest UN vote.

  10. Because USA enacts laws like the Magnitsky Act which stops corrupt politicians and oligarchs using the US as a place to hide money. And they force all other western nations to follow suit because they are using their banking systems.
They even went after the corrupt FIFA officials. Sepp Blatter the head of FIFA had an outstanding arrest warrant in America.
So, if you are a criminal, of course America is ‘evil’. Just take a close look at the nations who say that, they are all inevitably run by corrupt regimes.
