British grocers may have been selling rotten meat ‘for years’

  1. Well if they have been selling me rotten meat for several years now, I can honestly say it tastes pretty good.

    Great, now I’m hungry, again.

  2. Incompetent supermarkets failing to test food? Neigh! Such a thing is unheard of. I won’t have any more of this horsing around. You’ll have to findus some more evidence!

  4. I have a really sensitive nose and gave up buying most meat from supermarkets years ago. One benefit of Hello Fresh is that the meat is fresh.

  5. Is there a way to check what abattoire the meat is coming from, say a QR code that links to an easy to read system. E.g high levels of rotten meat found at last inspection or high levels of salmonella or fresh and healthy.

  6. And this is why I went mostly vegitarian last year. I don’t trust tories to pass the right regulations, meat sellers to maintain h+s, or supermarkets to actually check what they buy.

  7. Iv been buying all my meat from Costco for years. I tried some steak and chicken breast from Sains, Tesco and Lidl the past 2 years and you would be stunned at the quality and freshness difference.

The super market steak is glued together and does not look or taste like real meat anymore. They are also brown, not red.
Chicken breasts are also injected with so much water they no longer taste of chicken and are very slimy.

Fruit and veg this year has also gone to shit in Aldi and Lidl. They used to be great. Now the carrots taste strange and last maybe 2-3 days before they start to rot. Most of the time they are rotting in the bag.

They are providing use with actual crap these days…

  8. I’ve noticed that chicken is very often rotten on or immediately after purchase. Sometimes it just has that horrible patchy, white colour to it and stinks to high heaven. If it’s early enough I’ll still cook and eat it covered with enough sauce and seasoning but sometimes it still has that rotten smell/taste to it.

  9. It keeps happening but I bought some chicken, 30th of March the expiry date and i bought it on the 26th, next day the meat smelt bad. This has happened to me more than a few times.

  10. I haven’t read the article and I place most blame on the supermarket that it’s about supply issues but when I worked in a Tesco when I was younger you’d be shocked the amount of times customer will walk around a store for an hour in the summer with some meat or their egg mayo sandwich in their trolley and then put that back on the shelf for the next customer.

That meat at that point is likely not legally safe for consumption but it’s also the customer’s fault. (I mean it’s very unlikely to make you sick but it’s a lot more likely than before).

  11. none of this is on supermarkets them self, but the suppliers if true. the meat enters a supermarket distribution centre and is picked and loaded and sent out within a max of 24 hrs. once it hits the supermarkets they dont leave it in the back to rot… its wheeled out into the store to be put into the fridges. when wagons arrive at the RDC from suppliers they are temp tested aswell, not just meat but all chilled trailers are temp tested, food is and dose get rejected and sent back to suppliers if the temps out of spec

  12. As someone who works in the food industry this is so frustrating. We are audited to death and this proves that all the time and resource put into it is wasted because it’s totally ineffective at catching anybody who is actually acting in bad faith. The number of non-conformances I’ve seen because an operator has crossed out an error on paperwork, without signing their initials and dating the correction, as if signing and dating a correction would actually stop anybody who was actually trying to falsify paperwork.

  13. My bro bought a “fresh” turkey for Christmas in 2021. It rotted on the fridge and damn near ruined his Christmas…

This shit wouldn’t surprise me at all.

  14. I have just got a kitchen and a fridge/cooker for the first time in years and am now living round the corner from a supermarket and I was excited to try cooking but the comments in this thread are terrifying me.

  15. Anybody who’s ever been abroad knows that the UK gets the leftovers, the nearly rotten or sometimes rotten meat, veg and fruit.

Especially now with Brexit, no food exporter would send their best stock with the chance it being stuck at the border for a couple of days.
