Hard to see how they could ever prove murder at this remove though.
Hard to convict to be honest. I presume the pair arrested are the biological parents – the father could very well argue he wasn’t even aware the mother was pregnant (which no one seems to have been anyway if they didn’t come to police attention at the time), and if the mother is only in her 50’s now she may have been a minor at the time etc.
All they can prove from DNA is who the parents were. Any solicitor will instruct them to say nothing. In this country, murder is extremely difficult to prove, even today with with confessions, cctv, mobile phone data, etc. I’d say virtually impossible to prove who killed the baby 40 years ago.
