Speaking as someone who was a youth worker for over ten years, this is an incredibly shit policy.
Informing parents of things like this by default is dangerous. Some parents have incredibly strict points of view, particularly where religion is involved. Given information like this about gender, or sexuality, can lead to some parents taking harmful action towards their children, which in the worst cases can be tantamount to abuse.
No one should ever be legally obliged to out a child to someone if it may put the child at risk.
This is a direct clone from a bill in Florida that was designed to deliberately out LGBT+ teenagers to their parents. I wonder how long it will be until they start testing the waters for forced detransition and taking LGBT+ kids away from their parents.
Yep. Importing nonsensical right wing American politics is this government’s thing.
Isn’t it nice to know your government is doing shit like this instead of fixing the economy, the NHS and housing. Rishi Sunak is probably sat in 10 Downing Street right now wearing a Maggie Thatcher mask figuring out how to bring back section 28.

Bigoted monster Rosie Duffield is “quoted” in the article. Tell me this isn’t a terf hit job
Worth pointing out that the report in question was written by a researcher in Political Theology with no scientific or educative background, and is riddled with misinformation and suggestive language. The thrust of the report is the suggestion that teachers are somehow across the country colluding to not teach the curriculum; and simultaneously that teenagers even being made aware that trans people exist is some form of brainwashing or dangerous.
I’ll just note for what seems like the umpteenth time that trans people have been protected under the equality act in this country since 2010.
Things just keep getting worse. LGBTQ people could really use some solidarity about now.
So… they’ve decided to fully embrace the US Republican’s dog whistle of Trans bad…
And I’m not even slightly surprised – surely if the teacher becomes aware of it, the only appropriate response is “Do you have anyone else you can talk to about this? Your parents?”
And if the child says no, then you don’t fucking say anything. To force teachers to inform parents is to potentially enable abuse of the child.
Shaking my head at the comments on here. The *vast* majority of parents are responsible and support their children in every way possible.
The default should be ‘tell the parents unless there is genuine evidence that it would put the child in danger’.
Lets also look at who wrote the foreword for this report too
Labour MP Rosie Duffield
Which if you know her track record should tell you everything you need to know about how much this report is trying to protect kids questioning their gender identity
In a foreword to the report, Labour MP Rosie Duffield – who has been outspoken on gender issues – said: “Policy Exchange exposes the reality that this ideology is widespread across secondary schools.
“This government has failed children by allowing partisan beliefs to become entrenched within the education system. Meanwhile, the opposition has failed to pull them up on it.”
So good when kids, schools, and a vulnerable minority are used as political footballs.
Much better that we get some sound bites in than listen to and base our policies on information from doctors, psychologists, and teachers.
They were trying to establish if a school would out a child as trans to their parents. Would they out a child as gay? And if not, what’s the difference? (If they do, then the bigger question is what the fuck is going on in our schools?)
1. It is absolutely not a school’s or teacher’s responsibility to inform parents about anything to with a kid’s sexuality or gender identity. It’s not their business. It’s between parent and child and they should keep out of it.
2. Some children could be harmed if outed to their parents. This could lead to people being subjected to violence or even murder.
So Sunak is in favour of outing kids to their parents.
Fuck you, Sunak. This IS going to hurt kids.
I wish I could say it was surprising that after all the government’s endless talk of “safeguarding” only to then use a dishonest report as an excuse to undermine the safety of LGBT pupils/students, but I learned a long time ago that disingenuous cruelty is the point.
Tories copying the Republicunts in US Congress. Surprise, surprise. When when we get parents told that their kids are questioning their sexuality?? Fascist fucking cunts.
I really struggle to believe that 19% of English secondary schools have teenage boys and girls changing in the same rooms for PE.
This will kill kids, some parents will absolutely abuse the fuck out of their kids if they’re queer
Stupid and dangerous yes, but how would this be enforced. Teachers can just selectively not hear or forget, you could never prove it
The party of Section 28 goes to bat again. Fashes gonna fash.
Let’s not forget how all this started and that’s when politicians and the media started putting up the lives of trans folk for wider public debate and including people who lack any awareness or understanding of what being trans means.
**Trans lives, and indeed all the lives of anyone LGBTIQ+, are not your debate.**
It really is that fucking simple.
Rinse and repeat for people with disabilities, asylum seekers and migrants, the black community, and so on and so forth.
>The PM acknowledged “these are really sensitive areas”.
Okay so that means Sunak is too dense to understand that he needs to butt the fuck out of the issue. You fuck up a kid’s comprehensive schooling, chances are you fuck them up for life.
The Government should not be in the business of outing individual people.
This is getting down voted to all hell.
Worked in a school for quite a while. I don’t agree with what the tories do this should be done for the safety of the child at school and at home.
In school there is still a stigma on all of this as well as with parental support. At the end of the day the state and school has a right to uphold the safety of a child at all costs.
Obviously, doing this could put them in danger at home however correct education should be provided to parents.
The school I worked at did it correctly, using an all staff email to inform of pronouns and preferred names and if parents are supportive or not.
Telling parents before the child reveals it to them may help smooth the transition and shock that this should create in a household
> schools believe that informing parents when their child expresses a wish to change gender or questions their identity breaches their confidentiality
Yeah, cause it bloody fucking well is!
I grew up under section 28.
My life was endangered when my dad found out I was queer. He tried to beat the queer out of me. And when that didn’t work he threw me out.
This isn’t theoretical harm. This is shit my generation and those before me lived.
We fixed this shit for our kids. Can we not go back.
