  1. I’m an architect and also someone who is badly affected by the housing crisis. I’ve lived here and abroad, and me and my partner have no place of our own and will emigrate as a direct result of this crisis.

The reason we have a housing crisis is bad planning.

The absence of good planning is the issue. Cutting corners with planning may seem like it’ll help things but it won’t.

There’s lots of things I disagree with this sub on, but the only thing that makes me want to post here is people saying that planning objections are why we have a housing crisis. It’s not. It’s a failure to plan properly, and to be directed by rather than direct the worst aspects of our construction industry that has us here.

I expect to drown under a million posts about nimbys

  2. Did anyone actually read the planning submission?

The department of education had objected to this already as there isn’t enough schools. These 1000 apartments would be additional the 2000 already in progress (of which less than 500 have been built), the infrastructure is not there to support the additional people on the DART and car traffic. Also the developer tried to get around the local council’s planning rules by going down the SHD route.

If anything this is an example of the planning process being applied correctly. Nothing to stop the developer coming back with a revised plan, which they will undoubtedly do.

  3. Can’t build that; the density is too high.

Can’t build that; the density is too low.

Can’t build there; that’s in the city and would ruin the skyline.

Can’t build there; that’s in the suburbs and would be inappropriate.

Can’t build there; that’s in a commuter town and we can’t have those growing.

Can’t build there; that’s a rural area and it would be out of character.

Can’t build housing there; there’s not enough infrastructure to support it.

Can’t build infrastructure there; there’s not enough housing to justify it.

  4. Instead the greenbelt will be covered with homeless camps… what the absolute fuck. Why aren’t be burning this mother fucker down in protest like the french?

  5. While I am coming around to build taller outside of the city centre, when I read the full reasons for the decision I agree with it.

Looking at the comments here too many people just seen the headline or scanned for stuff they want to shout about.
