Today Malta celebrates Freedom Day (Jum il-Ħelsien). On this day in 1979 the last of the British troops withdrew from Malta, signifying an end to millennia of colonial rule. Pictured are President Anton Buttiġieġ and his wife waving goodbye to the HMS London, the last British warship to leave Malta

  1. Now Malta is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, has one of the lowest wages on the continent, has only 2-3 industries, one of the most polluted, the worse public transit system probably in the world, unhealthy people and barely make any children because they can’t afford it and probably has one of the lowest quality of education in Europe.

But you have your hunting, religious feasts and your 50Eur tax rebates every 4 months or so coming from the government so life’s good

  2. Wait. Millennia? I am pretty sure Brits did not colonise Malta 1000 years ago. Normans? Sure. But definitely not Brits. Or are those linked as one?

  3. The only overseas territory as far as I know where a British monarch actually lived for a short period (the late QEII in periods between 1949 and 1951 at Villa Guardamangia).
