Similar laws exist in several other places (AFAIK in Quebec). They seldom have stricter rules and even steeper fines.
Finally. I’ve been to the Trevi fountain and the Tower of Pisa and everyone speaks only English. /s

I wonder what she is going to do about the Sardinian language, which according to the UNESCO, is “definitely endangered”. Those who don’t know, Sardinian language is spoken on the Italian island of Sardinia which is geographically below the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a bit hypocritical of her when Italian language is thriving and the Sardinian language (spoken on the Italian island of Sardinia) will one day be extinct.

I’ve read ‘Italian Lasagna’ and was totally getting behind the idea.
Reality is that Italian, while interesting and unique, has no usefulness outside of Italy.
Article six of this law proposal also states that the use of Italian language should be mandatory for all teachings in every degree of education except for the teaching of foreign languages. So what about all of university’s degree and courses taught in English? What about exchange students? Should degrees in medicine, engineering, business, architecture etc. taught in English be closed?
This is certain to improve the earnings and standard of living of Italian people. /s

I never understood the language purists. Language is one of the most fluid cognitive faculties we have. Try an read some literature from at least 200 years ago. Go even further back in time, and it becomes almost impossible.

I like these kinds of laws tbh. To me, using English words in day-to-day conversation when there’s perfectly fine words available in your native language just sounds bad. So ensuring people stay in touch with their native language more is good imo.
This is a different reaction than I expected. We have a problem with people not assimilating linguisticaly here in Slovenia so I kind of see what point they are trying to make.
Meloni should first worry about schooling and teaching proper Italian at school and get the kids to go to school.
She gets most of her votes from unschooled people that can’t even write in Italian.
Generally speaking, the places requesting for “language protection” laws are also the ones with most uneducated population where many can’t speak correctly or write in their native language.
They must be terrified when hearing a language not from their territory, and are in absolute panic and completely afraid. Fear makes you want to cancel other cultures, instead of learning about them and increase your communication abilities.
No intelligent person will ever say “I don’t want to speak any other language than my own”.
