The NMBS calls it ambitious, I prefer the term ‘unrealistic’. For one, an increase in traffic is not desirable on an already saturated railroad network that requires constant and intensive maintenance. Not to mention that this is in stark constrast to the intention of reducing delays in the long run. Furthermore, it remains to be seen whether they can actually find large numbers of motivated job seekers that are willing to work even earlier, later and more weekends than is already the case, in a highly competitive labour market. Given the current climate of discontent and mismanagement, I would be highly surprised if this plan actually comes to fruition.
As a train driver im a bit… Concerned?
Where will we get the staff? They already cant fill the job openings in some regions. Will Alstom actually deliver the new trains?
The train net is already saturated as it is. This will cause more delays unless a clever well thought plan comes with it to priorise some trains.
Trains are packed in rush hour, but empty at other times during the day. Will we have even more empty trains or will they plan them at the already saturated rush hours?
Mensen tis 1 april vandaag hé
I think they released the article a bit too early by accident.
And who is gonna pay for all this? Where will the money come from? The NMBS itself is a monster in adding federal debt.
2000 extra trains means roughly 300 a day extra. Let’s say the railways operate 18 hours, that means 16 trains an hour extra. That’s not really going to cut it.
