Radicalised youth targeted Bart De Wever

  1. **The jihadist youths arrested in Antwerp, Brussels and Eupen on Monday wanted to kill Bart De Wever (N-VA) and attack police stations, Gazet van Antwerpen writes.**

Detectives from the Terro division of Antwerp’s federal judicial police raided several addresses of radicalised youths simultaneously on Monday evening, including in Merksem and Borgerhout. Five suspects were arrested in Antwerp. Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) spoke of “a plot aimed at government agencies”.

The investigators had been keeping an eye on the youths for some time because they were said to be rapidly radicalised. Not only did they make plans to attack police offices, they also wanted to kill N-VA president Bart De Wever. The headscarf ban in Antwerp, where counter staff are not allowed to wear visible religious signs, was said to have been one of the motives.

    ‘Advanced plans’

The investigators and the federal prosecutor’s office distinguish between an Antwerp and a Brussels branch. The Antwerp group revolved around Elias E.A. (20) from Merksem. He came on the detectives’ radar after a tip-off from a foreign intelligence service. There is also a Brussels group around Adam D. (19). The detectives also came across an “old acquaintance” during the investigation: 19-year-old Kosovar Sebastian B. from Eupen. He had already been arrested two years ago for plotting an attack on a police station.

Investigators established that the groups from Antwerp and Brussels sought contact with each other. When it became clear that the suspects were looking for weapons, the federal prosecutor’s office decided to intervene. The prosecutor’s office called the plans “concrete and advanced”.

The searches of the Antwerp suspects also revealed this. The raids on Monday found a demilitarised weapon whose barrel had been disabled. In addition, investigators also found two so-called BB-guns: pistols that fire small plastic bullets. But the group was also diligently searching for more powerful firearms.

    Seven in jail

Brussels judicial police also arrested three men from Schaarbeek, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek and Zaventem on Monday night. Adam D. was arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist crime and spreading a message “with the intention of inciting to commit a terrorist crime”. His companions, 23-year-old Belgian Karim H. and 20-year-old Bulgarian Sergey R., were also arrested on suspicion of participating in the activities of a terrorist organisation. A total of eight people were arrested during the operation, seven of whom must remain in detention. On Monday, they will appear before the council chamber.

The federal prosecutor’s office confirmed that the Antwerp branch of the terrorist group made plans to liquidate N-VA president Bart De Wever. ‘De Wever’s name did indeed come up in the Antwerp investigation,’ said Eric Van der Sypt, the spokesman for the federal public prosecutor’s office. ‘But it is not the case that a day and an hour had already been set for the attack to take place. It wasn’t that specific now.’

De Wever himself could not be reached for a comment. ‘This is a judicial matter on which we cannot comment at all,’ his spokesman said.

  2. Murder attempts with 2 BB guns.

Did they buy the Fisher´s Price: “my first assasination” pack?
