Italian government seeks to penalize the use of English words | CNN

  1. Nothing else was expected from someone who has sympathy for Mussolini. English is language of communication in EU and you will be penalised for using it in EU Country…

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t English one of the EU ~~parliamentary~~ working languages while Italian is not?

And would any of the government outside the Fratelli d’Italia even support this?

  3. Language is an ever evolving communication tool. Petty rules and bureaucracy won’t prevent it from changing.

As has been said about English itself *”We don’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”*

English is absolutely full of borrowed words.

  4. Not that surprising anymore. Slovenes in Italy have to pay an extra of 60€ to get š, č or ž on their driving license….and Slovene is a co-official language in some areas

  5. A bit late for that. No need to penalize, just follow on the *Académie* footsteps.

For those unfamiliar, language that lost the “international” sphere fight, face that same language at the next level, in this case the national. Dutch is the one in the greater “danger”, as it is used commonly in the Netherlands in several industries inside the country.

Languages that had lost the “national” fight, need to fight for survival at the local level. E.g. Low German in Germany, Catalan in Spain, etc. And so on.

  6. What is easier: ban usage of English words or make some real changes that will benefit people. Ofc silly ban, but now you cant say she is doing nothing.

  7. I don’t understand that way of thinking. They complain about cancel culture but want to make such a move.

  8. Hah.
Bring back Latin, for all we care.

As a Finnish tourist I’m still going to scream “Katso merta!” which is *look at the ocean!* even if it sounds like *cazzo merda!* for an Italian…

  9. I am non-Italian who lives in Italy, and i have never seen a country that celebrates speaking only their mother tongue only. Like, being polyglot is a disgrace in Italy 😂

  10. I honestly don’t understand why people in the comments are so upset. I don’t think defending the use of the national language and taking measures against Anglicisation is something necessarily bad.
