Statement on “Tent-Classrooms” by Nazım Çavuşoğlu (The Minister of Education): “This is the reality of this country, and you will face it, we will face it.

  1. Minister of Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu remarked during his speech at the Parliament which occurred after the flooding of some ‘tent-classrooms’; “*This is the reality of this country, and you will face it, we will face it*”.

    Minister of Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu, remarking that the projects the ministries presented could not be realized due to financial difficulties, and that the tents are a reality of this country necessary to be faced; said “*There is nothing surprising about the condition the school buildings are in.*”

    Nazım Çavuşoğlu stated that after the February 6 earthquake, the country gained the means to face reality, and that the problems of the country can’t be attributed to only one single (*political?*) party, for they’re an accumulation of past problems.

    Çavuşoğlu, emphasizing the importance of not hindering education, noted that teaching in tents was initiated within the framework of ensuring this.

    He said when balancing the treasury of the country, salaries cannot be made the priority & schools relegated to the end of the list; and stated that this balancing act should be done in accordance with these needs.

    He remarked that the projects the ministries presented could not be realized due to financial difficulties, and that the tents are a reality of this country necessary to be faced.

    Expressing that there is nothing surprising about the condition government buildings & schools are in, Çavuşoğlu said “*since this government came into office in 2019, 13 schools were provided with help*” and gave examples.

    He noted in addition to these efforts, protocols on future private schools have been & will continue to be signed , and that everyone will be mobilized (*on this issue?*)

    **”NO ISSUES EXPERIENCED OTHER THAN IN CUMHURIYET HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH WILL BE TRANSFERRED IN 12 DAYS”**

    Expressing that the tents were due to necessity & many years of accumulating problems, Çavuşoğlu said teaching in tents was initiated as to not interrupt education, that no problems came forth excluding Cumhuriyet High School, and that this school will be transferred within 12 days.

    Çavuşoğlu thanked all municipalities, especially Famagusta Municipality, for their contribution & support.

    **”NAMIK KEMAL HIGH SCHOOL WILL BE HANDED OVER ON 30TH OF MARCH, PREFABRICATED CLASSROOMS WILL BE BUILT FOR OTHER SCHOOLS IN NEED”**

    Çavuşoğlu said Namık Kemal High School will be handed over on the 30th of March, and noted that 48m^(2) of prefabricated classrooms will be built for other schools in need.

    **REPORTS ARE BEING AWAITED…**

    Stating that reports on Dr. Fazıl Küçük (*a school*) & other schools are being awaited, Çavuşoğlu said they will ensure the proceeding of education with prefabricated classrooms as soon as the reports come out, saying “*life first, education second*”.

    Çavuşoğlu, saying “*a party which lost representation is lecturing us left & right*”, asked “*What contributions did you make to education when you led the Ministry of Education?*”

    Expressing that everyone should know the facts, he said he can’t take responsibility for losses of life like in Adıyaman by dressing up the truth.

    Noting that online education has not been adopted, he said the reports must be completed to start secondary education.

    Çavuşoğlu said a need to confirm the preliminary reports arose, and only by the end of the second evaluation would it be determined which schools education would proceed in.
